OK. I don't have strong views about the wording of the green motion - it seems a bit clumsy. But it is a real expression of fury with the ongoing ethnic cleansing and murder, which the British press mostly ignores. That's democracy. As to the LP posturing, let's see what happens if they need a deal.

Clearly any politiical solution that leaves any Palestinians alive is going to be messy and complicated. But its hard to see how a 2 state solution could make sense. Given settler greed, the remaining handkerchiefs of land would just be Bantustans.

That's true, and it is both bad and good. It does mean that the old way the greens made policy has to change. But it really is a vehicle for the many to get involved in politics. Making a new democratic process is difficult and exciting.

This is just fantasy. OK, there are some dozens of old greens who dislike change (not me, btw). But the greens have been an ecosocialist party since forever. What's new, of course, is that they have become enough of a nuisance to attract the full volume of the oligarch's megaphones.

So the change of PM has nothing to do with the Greens, then?

Accepting that the Guardian is what it is, the senior commentariat could really do with a spring clean. They mostly seem to be from another age. Only leave George Monbiot alone!

FWIW, so so I. But this kind of tedious ad hominem politics is a big part of the Westminster problem. Clearly, Burnham is in a difficult place. It's up to the Greens to keep up the pressure for real change. There is not going to be a "new normal". Just one crisis after another.

Where did this bizarre story about "if Zack Polanski doesn't win in Holborn, he'll be replaced as leader" come from? I see John Crace flogging this in the Guardian even. Anyone who knows anything about the Greens knows this is just nonsense. He needs to do well (and he will). I hope he wins.

Well..it's still a piece of meaningless gibberish. What I want is improving quality of life (in every postcode including mine).

Kind of silly abuse of Brown. Plenty to criticise him for (decades of fantasy solutions for Westminster domination) but 2008 was not his car crash.

Happy to move some taxation around, but let's start with reducing taxes on jobs (NI) and poor people (VAT) and increase in CGT, property tax, inheritance..

What a bizarre take on priorities! Country has sold everything, has broken infrastructure and institutions. Borrowing is expensive. Spend every available penny on investment in renewal of social and human capital!

Sadly, net immigration is low and falling because of hysterical pogrom talk and, of course, because Britain has become an unattractive place to live.

Totally. He's got 3 years with a huge majority. Why doesn't he do everything at once? Just write more bills. Wealth taxes, PR, abolish HoL, revalue council tax, Leveson 2.….

Maybe you'd be better off actually doing something to support Ukrainians (or even Palestinians).

we keep getting told the press don’t need regulatory reform. this is just racism. it’s not even being smokescreened or obfuscated. they’re calling a politician a race traitor for no reason other than that they don’t like him.

It is, I think, reasonable to worry about both "addiction" and"reduced attention span" as downsides to the online media economy. My point was that these are consequences of the "business model" (dominance of advertising) not mostly the technologies. And let's celebrate Wikipedia.

That's true. I meant to disagree with the idea that paper books are the only way to learn and enjoy stories. There are many ways, and they have their own advantages. Audio is a huge boon for the unsighted, for example. As I said, there are problems caused by the "monetisation of attention" (ugh).

To repeat an old meme - the problem is the monkeys not the typewriters. The techbros need to be aggressively regulated.

It isn't about technology. People read, and watch, and listen to much more than they ever did. There are problems, caused in my view by the dominance of advertising. Much content is known to be untruthful. Algorithms are designed to maximise revenue. This leads to a decline in long form media.

It just depends what you mean by growth. More AI-powered advertising? More chicken factories? More fossil fuels? Bigger land yachts? The only thing that needs to grow is quality of life for ordinary people. It's not hard to measure. Productivity, however, is. Do I want more productive care workers?

More people need decent homes to rent. Densify to ordinary 4 story apartment blocks, make developers use their land banks. The British obsession with home ownership is not sensible. Also, we really need to deflate the asset bubble. Sorry folks, your house prices need to go down.

I would have a little sympathy, had he not got to be LP leader by telling lies, smeared, expelled and driven out the party's activists, and ruled out in advance all the things the govt should have done.

Howard Green @howardigreen.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
Indeed. I am personally opposed to nuclear weapons. I could understand a case for participation in a European nuclear defence. Trident and successor is, though, just money down the drain. As to submarines, my concern is that they are big, expensive and increasingly vulnerable. Underwater drones?

But isn't that the whole story of current UK politics? It's absolutely all broken, but fixing it is just too hard and people will complain? This is a govt with a huge majority. JFDI. We really do need working public services and institutions.

Thing is, both sides are part of the problem. I don't think we need more defence spending. We need completely different defence. No aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, tank brigades. No bases in the Middle East. Software and drones.
