To help navigate these challenges, HOT and our partners have developed a three-part Responsible AI Framework. The framework explores ethical concerns, responsibilities in open source, and the human skills and judgment that must be protected as AI becomes more pervasive.
130
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team @hotosm.org · 04/06/2026
For open-source communities, the conversation becomes even more complex. AI has made it easier to generate code, bug reports, and pull requests. But reviewing and maintaining that work still depends on people. The burden on maintainers doesn't disappear because contributions are easier to create.
110
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team @hotosm.org · 04/06/2026
As these tools become more powerful, there is a risk of widening the gap between those who can access them and those who cannot.
100
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team @hotosm.org · 04/06/2026
Organizations need clear guardrails for the responsible use of AI as it becomes more embedded in our workflows. There are already concerns around intellectual property, training data, and labor practices. AI systems are also known to consume significant amounts of energy.
100
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team @hotosm.org · 04/06/2026
As AI becomes a bigger part of software development, concerns around privacy, security, and transparency arise. While much of the conversation focuses on speed and productivity, the bigger challenges are often ethical ones.
