Another LICAF sketch!
Colour drawing of Tintin and Calvin (but no Hobbes) walking across a log over a stream, hands outstretched to balance themselves. Tintin looks nervous, cartoon spiral over his head.

I really love Dick Briefer's funny Frankenstein strips. Some people prefer the later, more serious Frankensteins he did. I think those people are peculiar.

The standout for me is their version of "Baby's On Fire". An electrifying rendition of a deeply strange song.

I’m seeing a lot of rending of garments about the news, but all the complaints I’ve ever heard before about webtoon are about predatory practices when it comes to creators rights, and… well, lets just say I see no reason that should impair them working with Marvel and Disney.

(Puts on Old Man Pants) I used to enjoy spending a half hour reading a comic. I liked a bit of narrative density; and if a writer decided to be sparing with the text for a bit, those moments had a lot more impact. (Takes off Old Man Pants, hurriedly puts them back on again after hearing the screams)

Episode Number Nine @episodenumbernine.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
In a few weeks we'll be launching our new podcast where we look at British sitcoms using their 9th episode as the starting point. A curious conceit perhaps, but by the 9th episode of any sitcom the 'sit' is generally established and the 'com' should have bedded in. Well that's the theory anyway!

Saying "LOL" when you hear a joke is the one that does my head in. (Instead of, you know, laughing out loud.) I realise this is because I'm 170 years old.

It's the Lakes International Comic Art Festival this weekend! I will be there with comics, art, sketches and my new self-published FEZ PAPERS, which collects my old Fez strips, most of them in full colour for the first time.

The Karloff version of The Mummy had a similar plot and the first sequel to that came out in 1940, so that might be the connection.

Trying to learn new skills helps - I learned to work digitally a few years back, that was an engaging challenge for a while. Now I'm doing more traditional work and re-learning skills that have atrophied. Side projects with low/no stakes help, too.

I wonder if it's David Lyttleton, who did some stuff for Deadline Magazine back in the day. He's still illustrating - his style is very different now (www.davidlyttleton.com), but in the 90s his work looked like this:
Cover to a graphic novel, KlingKlangKlatch, written by Ian McDonald and drawn by David Lyttleton. The cover shows a blue mouse-eared character holding up its hands in a distressed way. The style is reminiscent of Gerald Scarfe at his most painterly.

Not necessarily? (Comic book logic!) They were both stand-ins for New York when they were created, at a time when none of their creators expected them to have to coexist. My gut impulse is that the intentions of their original creators carry more weight than the revisions of those who followed.

That bus thing is fairly common, but mainly used for disabled passengers around our way. I think it's on most buses but they only activate it when someone visibly needs it.
