For some reason, I decided to do my home-bound chores first, meaning I accidentally caught most of the Braves-Dodgers and missed most of the Rays game 😞

The upside of the Dodgers-Braves NLDS is that it at least guarantees we won't have a Dodgers-Braves NLCS. I'm glad this is the series confined to the Buck-Smoltz shadow realm, at least

It’s Bandcamp Friday, which is a good way to show support to your favorite artists! And if you need any recommendations, a lot of what I put on my playlists is stuff I found on Bandcamp! Here’s my most recent one, from a few weeks ago: www.hchoutofleftfield.com/2026/09/musi...

Flipped over to Astros radio broadcast as soon as the Phillies-Braves ended. Was kind of dreading leaving such an exciting game for The Horrors, and it seems like that was justified

The @Astros had just a 6.9% chance to make the postseason on May 20th 😮 Their #Postseason journey begins Tuesday!
A screenshot of the FanGraphs Playoff Odds graph for the Houston Astros, with their lowest odds falling on May 20th at 6.9%. Pictured: Yordan Alvarez high-fives teammates in the dugout wearing an orange Astros uniform with a dark blue batting helmet.

Forget the lottery. This is how we should determine the top ten draft slots.

We do have a chance for the Yankees to face one of the three NL teams they're still missing, though, for whatever that's worth.

Also, getting a new World Series match-up will be tricky. The Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox are first, tied-for-second, and third in most unique World Series opponents. And the Phillies, Cubs, Braves, Astros have each faced a lot of their potential opponents, despite much fewer pennants

It's kind of funny, because this actually wound up being a pretty straightforward year for my column. We have the three longest active droughts in the Brewers, Padres, & Guardians, but the median drought among this year's set is actually the Phillies & Yankees. Getting it that low is kinda tough!

Also, so much of hitting is pattern recognition. Adding even more extra marginal arms doesn't help hitters much if they only see each of them for ~1-2 PAs each in a season. I think that's at least part of why we aren't seeing more offense now even as teams call up more and more guys.

Kinda wild how much psychic angst I apparently saved myself by realizing as a teen “the stuff I like is apparently more niche than I realize, no matter how popular it seems in my circles”

Y'know, I hadn't really kept up with Dean Kremer after the Orioles traded him. Glad to see he's turned it around in Minnesota (especially today!), but also a little frustrating to see, feels like that happens to ex-O's pitchers a lot...

If you get too into pop discussion spaces, that type of thing will crop up. Lorde and Billie Eilish are pretty similar, and they'll get hit with it too sometimes. (I remember one fun discussion of "But Lorde's mom is a poet!"/"Okay, so how much exactly do you think a poet makes?")

I also feel like this about the "this stops being an issue if we just make college free" argument. Like, it would be nice & "parents overrate the chance of going pro/a scholarship" is definitely some of the issue. But a lot is just irrational, post hoc justification for what they already want to do!

trying to finish my playlist article so I can publish it ASAP. Writing my blurbs in a more modular style has generally been a plus, but it does lead to some issues where I'll reference something in consecutive paragraphs, then realize I don't actually want them side by side in the playlist itself

And I'm excluding the White Sox, because their year is still a surprise, just the positive "wait, we're good this year? what?" kind. Which is extra funny, because "the bad team is surprisingly good" just made the "everybody else underperforms" logjam bigger

The Red Sox have recovered nicely from their disaster start of course, but are still behind where they wanted opening the year.

It really is wild how basically every AL team except the Yankees and Rays saw their plans for 2026 go belly-up, in a way that basically all cancelled each other out.

Underrated reason I love Avatar (not SF but definitely nerdy). The Korra timeskip showed that the big challenges from Aang’s time *did* get resolved, but it just led to new problems down the road as a consequence, plus old problems becoming more unavoidable now that more pressing things were handled
