I'm going to be honest, that distinction without a difference there--given USAID's status as the most effective, efficient, and meaningful distributor of aid in human history--just makes me madder about it. The lives they've saved, the incredible tragedy of their dissolution, it's too much.

A few people? They were proudly advocating for the abolishment of USAID as a major party position last time I checked. It's okay, I understand that the party may have fundamentally different views and outlooks on things than I do, but that means that I won't be able to join or support them.

I'd love to be able to support the DSA. I generally align with a bunch of their platform planks. But until and unless they manage to divest from the pro-Russia/pro-China/anti-internationalism wing of their more strident set of positions, I won't be able to, and that's just how it is.

Oh yeah, there's a whole stepping up process. But if we're talking about elected officials, the people actually setting foreign policy are all high up in the Executive branch, and most of those don't come up through the foreign service or the State department.

Those new people in politics probably shouldn't be in high federal positions where they're setting foreign policy. Or should be willing to listen to experts and seniors with a LOT of experience and relationships internationally. They can learn the things they need to know, but doing it on the fly

I have friends in the foreign service. It is ASTONISHING how fast good intentions can fuck things up to the point of irrepparability if you don't know what you're doing. And how often the things people consider 'good sense' don't apply across cultures and in international affairs.

I'm not sure exactly what this means, but if "everyone else" means anyone at the federal level or even anyone who deals with international trade or immigration, then nope, figuring it out as you go is absolutely not sufficient. You need people with actual expertise and experience.
