Reminder that new users can catch up on past games via the calendar icon in the nav. They don't count toward your stats, but... you know, for the love the game. #horrorsky

New feature: Play games you missed via the calendar icon in the nav. Note: Games must be played on the day-of in order to count toward stats and streaks. But catch-up game results can be shared.

Will the app return to its former quiet glory? Who knows! But my friends are back at it, & the score sharing thread on the @evolutionofhorror.bsky.social Discord is back, so as far as I'm concerned, the good times are back. Join us, if you dare. www.horrordle.app, 9/9 🟨⬛🟨⬛⬛ 🟨🟨⬛🟨⬛ ⬛⬛🟨🟥⬛ 🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥

Horrordle — A Horror Word Game

It's like that other word game, but a bit creepier.

This means every daily word reflects a new film--788 and counting--exploring major hits & deep cuts stretching back to the silent film era. The app also now supports user accounts, so you can play across devices without losing your career stats or streaks.

But like any good horror story, the coffin only stays shut for so long. This new & improved Horrordle is rebuilt from the ground up, & now functions as a journey through the horror genre. Words & hints no longer reflect my finite horror knowledge, they're powered by the @horrorcodex.com database.

And I declared the coding exercise a success after ironing out all of the bugs. Unbeknownst to me, however, the project had quietly amassed ~1,500 daily users. I thought it was just my friends. And it was only after the site ran out of words & went into hibernation that I checked the traffic log.

...It was curating hundreds of horror-themed words & hints that took many very late nights of effort. Perhaps I was a little out of my depth as an editor, but nevertheless, I persisted. It was fun fixing bugs, & I learned a lot about how to manage a game across different timezones.

The rise, fall, & resurrection of Horrordle. A thread. 🧵 It all began innocently enough, as a weekend coding exercise in March 2024. A Wordle clone, but horror-themed. I shared it with some friends & decided to run it through Halloween 2025. Building the game itself was pretty straight forward...

Can always count on Ryan Murphy to ask, "How depraved must an outrageously fuckable person be before you overcome your horniness and feel the ick?" Again. And again. And again. But yeah... Not sure how Ed Gein becomes Ed Gein if he's the hottest dude in town?
