I saw this and immediately scheduled at least one hopeful banger this weekend. I promise I wanted to like all of these movies and I’m not just hating to hate 😭
A screenshot of this user’s Letterboxd recent activity. The following films are shown in order from left to right:
Dagr (a poster featuring an outline of a man is distorted with the title in slender red font superimposed on it) scored 2 stars with comments
The Bayou (a poster featuring a worried white woman evading a giant alligator baring its teeth in a swamp. The title is in bold red and white font); scored 2 stars with comments
Trap House (a poster featuring a Black undercover police officer brandishing a gun as he is about to round a corner. On the other side of the corner is a white man, shirtless and jacked wearing an industrial grade mask and emanating a threatening and sweaty aura. The title is in bold red font at the top of the poster); scored 2 stars with comments
Mister Creep (a poster featuring the half face of a creepy clown covered in a blue tint hovering above a glowing tv covered in blood in the darn. The title is in slender light bluefin); scored 1.5 stars with comments

I’m so mad at myself for trying to end 2025 like this. I have been craving a good found footage movie [that I haven’t already seen] and tried four different times before giving up 😭
Letterboxd last four movies rated. From left to right: Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story 5/10; Behind the Sightings 3/10; Seekers 2/10; The Black Water Vampire 4/10

Fantastic Film 19: Fuck My Son! U.S. Premiere I knew what I was getting into but I never expected a film like this to be so outrageously bland and unfunny. The gross out gore is certainly repulsive and the practical effects are pretty solid but otherwise it just feels edgy for the sake of edgy.

Fantastic Film 18: Vicious World Premiere A pedestrian supernatural horror film that wades around typical tropes without bringing much new to the table. Lacking clear direction for its protagonist and arbitrarily adding/removing/changing rules make it hard to root for. Fanning is good though.
Poster for Vicious. The title is in large slender red lettering in the top right middle corner. Dakota Fanning stares at the viewer in fear on the ground with an opened box next to her.

Fantastic Film 17: Silent Night, Deadly Night World Premiere/Secret Screening A fun slasher that will piss off all the right people with who Billy targets, this remake builds plenty of goodwill with fun characters, gory kills, & good laughs. It’s not revolutionary but it’s delightful all the same.
Poster for Silent Night, Deadly Night. The film’s title is half in white and red in bold letters at the bottom of the page. A bloody axe is wrapped in brightly colored Christmas lights.

Fantastic Film 16: Dawning World Premiere A dull, plodding trek through the woods, this arthouse horror attempts to deconstruct the slasher. Its treatise on the banality of death is interesting enough if the pacing wasn’t as punishing. Every time I thought it ended it came back w/ more [derogatory]
Dawning poster. The film’s title is in bold red lettering in the center of the poster in its original Norwegian. The rest is black and white with three women laying down in different scenes staring up at the sky.

Fantastic Film 15: The Restoration at Grayson Manor World Premiere Mixing camp, queerness, and melodrama, this indie horror has so many cool things going on. Colorful characters, vicious dialogue, and a gleeful penchant for violence make this so fun. Chris Colfer & Alice Krige are gloriously evil.
Poster for The Restoration at Grayson Manor. Actor Chris Colfer stares judgmentally off to the side. His face is awash in warm technicolor reds and purples. The film’s title is in solid white lettering at the bottom of the page.

Fantastic Film 14: Crazy Old Lady World Premiere Crazy Old Lady is hagsploitation without the exploitative elements. Captivating dialogue subverts the static nature of its largely single location story. Carmen Maura is so damn good in this. She manages to evoke fear and sympathy effortlessly!
Poster for Crazy Old Lady. The film’s title is in its original Spanish and is in bold pale yellow letters. The titular woman is seen wearing a red dress and carrying a turkey carver. Her face is slightly scratched out and blood splatters the page’s black background.

Fantastic Film 13: The Holy Boy International Premiere A deeply emotional and unsettling examination of faith, suffering, and queerness in a small town using bold imagery. The Holy Boy poses fascinating questions and crafts compelling characters against a slow boil into madness. Loved it obviously.
Poster for The Holy Boy. The film’s title is in slender red letters in its original Italian language. Against a white backdrop that slowly transforms into a scenic view of the mountains, a singular boy in white robes stands alone amongst dozens of bodies staring away from the viewer.

Fantastic Film 12: Don’t Leave the Kids Alone U.S. Premiere Great depiction of bickering brothers making the most annoying decisions [complimentary]. I had a lot of fun with this one. Tense, claustrophobic, and harrowing, this is such a fun, shocking movie. Loved the two competing stories.
Don’t Leave the Kids Alone poster. The title is in large, bold white letters and takes up the majority of the poster. Various scenes from the movie are included including two siblings fighting while looking scared at an unseen force, a mother holding a telephone worried, and a sinister silhouette of a dog staring imposingly at the viewer. The poster is awash in a bright and light blue tint.

Fantastic Film 11: Black Phone 2 World Premiere Creative, scary, and emotional as hell, Black Phone 2 is a worthy follow up to the supernatural slasher. Great performances, captivating storytelling, and emotionally resonant themes make this sequel hard to discount. I cried three times & during Q&A.
Poster for Black Phone 2. The title is in slender black lettering at the bottom of the poster set against a backdrop of snow. The iconic mask of the Grabber lay half buried in the snow.

Fantastic Film 10: Haunted Heist World Premiere The first act is GREAT. Very funny with playful character dynamics. Once the ghosts are introduced, however, the action gradually slows and the film meanders quite a bit. The cast is great and the production values are there though!
Still from Haunted Heist. The core four characters of the film, three men and one woman, stare in shock, fear, and disbelief off in the distance. They are all dressed in various sweaters/pull ups of muted colors and the background is of wood paneling.

Fantastic Film 9: Beast of War North American Premiere Mark Coles Smith the man that you ARE! More films with him leading please. A confident shark war horror film, Beast of War easily makes the top list for best shark films of the new millennium. Fun, intense, & just a lil sexy, it’s a grand time.
Beast of War poster. The film’s title is in bold white letter against a dull blue/gray backdrop. A beautiful man lays down on a makeshift raft as a Japanese fighter plane shoots at him and a terrifying shark comes out of the water to attack. There is a slight bloody tint to the water in the left hand corner.

Fantastic Film 8: A Useful Ghost U.S. Premiere A brilliant examination on how capitalism crushes your dreams and uses those with good intentions, this whimsical Thai supernatural comedy is gloriously queer and fun while still tackling important issues. Need to spend 10+ movies in this universe pls
Poster for A Useful Ghost. The title is in slender pale yellow lettering against a colorful background of blues and pinks. Various items from the film are depicted including a vacuum cleaner, a city scape, and various characters holding objects like guns, cleaning supplies, and umbrellas. The main ghost character stares vacantly in an iconic blue dress off to the side.

Fantastic Film 7: V/H/S/Halloween World Premiere Seeing these films every year is the best tradition at the fest. It’s not my favorite V/H/S film but it’s absolutely solid. Lots of fun and creativity in these shorts. The scariest segment is “Home Haunt” while the most creative is “Fun Size.”
V/H/S/Halloween poster. The film’s title is centered in bold red lettering. The directors are listed in smaller white lettering below it. All of this is at against a cool blue background with an orange bucket spilling out various candy.

Fantastic Film 6: Night Patrol World Premiere Intense, timely, and so well made, Night Patrol is a damn good time. Deeply upsetting yet action packed, there’s a lot to the story’s mythology that feels both powerful and unique to the sub-genre this one occupies. Great performances and effects here!
Poster for Night Patrol. A giant skull with pronounced teeth looms over a black backdrop. Inside the skull the scene of the silhouette of a person with their hands up is shown with two silhouettes holding guns. The title is in bold red letters at the bottom of the poster.

Fantastic Film 5: A Woman Called Mother World Premiere A slow burn, this is Indonesian horror is an intense, emotional ride. Production elements that punch above its weight, great scares, and fantastic performances, specifically from the actress who plays the mother, make this a must watch.
The film’s title is in long, slender red letters in its original Indonesian title. A mother, daughter, and son sit at a dinner table. The children face each other, side eying their mother with worry. The mother faces away from the viewers and directly into a mirror that shows a devilish smile on her face. All of this is set against a dark pallet of grays and blues in their home.

Fantastic Film 3: The Curse World Premiere A familiar film steeped in East Asian horror conventions, The Curse is a mixed bag of scares & laughs. The idea is interesting enough before getting marred by the film’s inability to stick its landing. Loved the villain but hated how everyone lacks agency.
Poster for The Curse. A variety of dirty mirrors are seen, some feature various characters from the movie including a frightening young woman staring at the mirror and a sinister and imposing ghostly woman in a red dress. The film’s title is in slender red letter in the bottom right hand corner.

Fantastic Film 2: Crushed North American Premiere What a downer. A meandering and muddled narrative obscures the various important themes of sex trafficking, animal abuse, apostasy, and the exploitation of the Global South. It may not tie these together well but it is very upsetting to its credit.
Poster for Crushed. A couple stand inside a giant closed cat carrier staring blankly at the viewer. A little girl in a schoolgirl outfit stares slightly to the side looking worried at a camera directly in front of the carrier, an adorable orange kitten mirrors her on the opposite side. All of this is against a bright yellow background. The title is in bright bold red lettering.

SXSW Film 11: It Ends World Premiere A pared down hangout horror, It Ends is a coming-of-age story packaged within a supernatural thriller thoughtful in its young adult dynamics. What happens when the direction of life takes an unforgiving, pointless, and boring turn? Do you press on or give up?

SXSW Film 9: Descendent World Premiere A powerful meditation on fatherhood, this sci-fi horror captures the vulenrable side of masculinity that neither blames nor absolves men of responsibility for their mental health. It unsettles more than scares; the big payoff isn't in fear but its heartache.
Poster for the film Descendent, the title is in slender white font at the bottom of the poster. A foreboding eye stars at the viewer, it looks rather alien. Inside the eye is a scene where the silhouette of the main character looks up at the sky as a bright white beam of light passes through. Poster for Clown in a Cornfield. Title font is in thinner bold white text. A colorful clown is popping out of a bloodied jack-in-the-box with a Baypen logo. The jack-in-the-box is being held up by a white, gloved hand and is all set against a black background.
