On August 4, MO voters took to the polls to vote on Amendment 4 - which would have made citizen-led petitions harder to pass. 80% of the voters rejected it. It was soundly defeated in some of the most rural and some of the most urban parts of the state.

For the cost of $20 million in “shock gloves” to be worn by masked goons, we could fund a year of 30 different R01 research grants - the gold standard grants that gave us statins, mRNA technology, and a whole bunch of cancer breakthroughs. This administration has terminated 1,392 NIH grants.

Polling had him down by double digits. A good reminder that polling is a snapshot in time of a snapshot of people used to make an educated guess about the future. Like using the rear view mirror as a map. Helpful in familiar terrain. But not when driving in a forest fire of unprecedented times.

In 1970 the top marginal tax rate was 70% and it kicked in at incomes over $1.6 million in today’s dollars. By 1986 Reagan had slashed it to 28% and the debt tripled. But do go on about how working people using benefits they paid for are the problem.

It would have cost around $15-20 million to continue testing for all 8 major food borne pathogens. Instead, RFK Jr. cut back to two. The reflecting pool renovations have cost (so far) $16.4 million. Would happily exchange a newly-painted reflecting pool for the ability to eat a salad.

To put it in perspective. The $16M spent on the Reflecting Pool is enough to fully fund 8 multi-year RO1 grants - the NIH’s flagship, gold-standard grant. That grant gave us statins, pacemakers, and LASIK (& lots more). It’s not just the waste. It’s the lost opportunity that the waste represents.

Hot take: investing in down-ballot statehouse races is one of the most efficient uses of political money. Hotter take: when they're in red or previously uncontested districts, your $ is even more efficient because those races are about direct voter contact and you've got a lot of low-hanging fruit.

“Why don’t you move?” Because being in a blue state doesn’t protect you. Red state legislators have no original ideas - they’re foot soldiers for bigger fish with bigger designs. If RFK, Jr. wants to meaningfully decrease rates of depression, he can support paid family and maternity leave, equal pay for women, universal healthcare, and fully funded public schools. Stigmatizing medication that treats the mental impact of a country that devalues your existence won’t cut it.
