I've looked at literally thousands of online event listings over the past year and a half and now I have Opinions™ about how they should be structured, perhaps you would be interested in these if you also run events or you just enjoy a slightly exasperated blog post phirephoenix.com/blog/2026-09...

things I wish every event organizer would do for their event listings
Hello yes, I am aware that it’s been almost a full year since the last post. This is largely because running Show Up Toronto and writing a newsletter for it every week takes a lot of time and energy. ...

LLMs are not abstractions, they are not analogous to compilers, and anyone claiming otherwise is being basically dishonest about the basic nature of computer programming

i made a helpful reference
top right: a fractured black rectangle where one half is labeled "autism is bad" and the other side is labeled "FACT CHECK: autistic people are productive members of society".

top left:
WRONG
-negating their frame reinforces it
-starts with what it isn't instead of what it is
- your argument is shaped like their argument

bottom right: large image of Kirby, a pink blob inhaling and the "autism is bad" fragment, labeled THEY'RE DOING EUGENICS

bottom left:
RIGHT
- you eat their frame
-starts with what's actually happening
-contains and explains what they're doing
-your argument is shaped like kirby

As anyone in publishing will tell you, women do not resist reading books by men, but men will often dismiss books by women. This is not a publishing problem or a failure to target men. It's a misogyny problem.

I really think the only reasonable response to the increasing prevalence of 996 in the tech world is to organize for a 20 hour workweek with no reduction in pay. They are trying to move the Overton window for working hours; let’s drag it the fuck back.

Today @dairinstitute.bsky.social is releasing the Luddite Lab Resource Hub. The hub hosts case studies, resources, and political education for unions, labor organizations, and workers who want to fight “AI” and automation at work. labor.dair-institute.org
Screenshot of the Luddite Lab website. The word Luddite Lab is in the top left corner. The tables in the top read: Case Studies, Primers, Resource Library, Contact Us, and About. The text below reads: “The Luddite Lab Resource Hub provides resources for unions, labor organizations, and worker-organizers fighting AI and automation at work. The lab provides strategies for worker-led governance and oversight of new technology through case studies, primers, and a resource library.” Below, there are five cards: Case Studies (Stories from worker organizers resisting AI), Primers (Applied research insights into AI, automation, and the future of work), Resource Library (Additional resources from partners), Contact Us (Ways to connect with the Luddite Lab team), and About (About the Luddite Lab project and team)

If you're doing 50 of anything in a month (in this case reading papers) when it would previously have taken a year, it's essential to interrogate whether or not these are still qualitatively the same activity. They might be! It's in no way guaranteed.

I understand the sentiment that this is the least capable that a tool will ever be, *if* you own the tool. if it's remotely deployed, you own neither pricing, nor decisions on capability tradeoffs.

historically I concerned myself primarily with the fields I supported by working on software – this worked pretty well. increasingly it feels like whatever the field, the cross-cutting patterns around attention and monitoring and such are inescapable even when the purported goal is noble.

had cause to use figma for something outside of corporate single-sign-on land for the first time today and it's so frustrating to be funnelled into an open text prompt interface. even a link beneath the hero to "create a blank artboard" would have felt like minimal friction
blank project page for "figma make". the view is dominated by an input box for an LLM prompt. a top level menu is open, showing the three levels of menu navigation required to create a blank design file.
