As for chassis codes, Rennlist lists 'em all out by subforum names, but fair warning, the politics forums are noxious and I avoid them like the plague. They're helpful otherwise, though, save for the goober who trolls 944 threads to suggest an LS swap at every opportunity.

The Boxster is good fun, too, but the 944's front engine is SO much easier to work on. I'd recommend a 914 if you want to go aircooled, too, but it also has mid-engine accessibility woes (although if that Type 4 engine is like the 411's, it doesn't take much to remove).

Parts availability is actually quite good for the 944 and later 924S! There's a wealth of knowledge online from racers and enthusiasts (including a whole how-to guide in Clark's Garage), 944-specific parts joints (944online, 944 Barn), and Porsche still makes a lot of its classic parts.
