Another recurring point: while the vast majority of music critics in the 20th century were men, women were more influential in determining what music became popular. For example, women liked dancing, so popular music tended to be dance friendly. Men danced to be around women.

He also argues that you can’t understand popular music just by looking at the artists that are critically respected in retrospect and ignoring the stuff that was very popular at the time but is now looked down upon. Prime examples are Paul Whiteman in 1920s jazz and Pat Boone in the 50s.

The title refers to the split in popular music that occurred starting in the mid 60s into predominantly white “rock” and black “soul.” He argues that prior to that popular music was more interracial. For example, both white and black audiences liked jazz, swing, and early R&B/rock and roll.

This book was very interesting. It’s a history of popular music from ragtime to the 1970s. One recurring point is that placement of music into categories is more about marketing than the actual music. Another is the creative tension between music as art to listen to versus something to dance to.

Someone told me they had faxed me something at work. We then had to figure out where faxes go. It’s been years since I received a fax.

I like when there’s a glitch and the image and text don’t match up. This is a good one.

I have listened to a fair amount of post-WW II modern jazz, so paradoxically the 1920s to 1945 stuff sounds fresh to me.

We have been watching Downton Abbey. Never thought I would enjoy a soap opera about the thwarted romances of aristocrats and their household employees. Ah, middle age.

A Seattle resident recorded Ballard's sea lions — then created something unique
From his Ballard home, Chris Mills can hear sea lions when he goes to bed and when he wakes up. To some, they're incessant. To Mills, incandescent.
