Why mulch your garden beds? This week, I got a dump truck load of mulch from ChipDrop, a free-to-low-cost program that pairs local arborists with homes that want lots of mulch. Scroll below to see how I’m using it on the farm.

One of my farmer’s market customers brought me delicious fig jam recently, so I recreated one of my favorite gin cocktails, from The Vault in Tulsa, OK.
A glass of a gin and fig jam cocktail: the drink is murky brown with fig seeds visible among the ice.

Brewing my first batch of compost tea using local worm castings (from Dirty Chicks Worm Castings in Lexington, SC), liquid kelp, and a bit of sorghum molasses. By aerating the water with these ingredients, you make a nutrient-rich, bioactive “tea” to water or spray your crops, feeding microbes.

We were going to have a fundraiser tonight at The Hoot in Columbia, SC, to support the rebuilding of a library in Gaza, before the weather forced us to postpone (new due coming soon!). We’d love to still raise funds in the meantime!

Meet the hornworm eating my heirloom tomato. Check out the images to learn more about the parasitic wasps that are about to eat the hornworm. #nosprayfarm #gardening #biology
Hornworm on the underside of a tomato leaf. The hornworm is covered in parasitic wasp eggs. (There’s also a cartoon gif with fire and the word “Muahahah”Meet the hornworm: can quickly decimate tomato or tobacco crops

Meet the parasitic wasp: adult lays on eggs on hornworms so when the babies hatch, they’ve got a buffetSure, I *could* spray my tomatoes but by letting the hornworm temporarily eat this tomato plant, I’m allowing Mother Nature to enact a pest control solution that takes care of itself for the long run. These parasitic wasp eggs will hatch soon, and the babies will grow into adults who continue the cycle on and on. Adults drink nectar, so I’ll be sure to keep small flowers like yarrow nearby to encourage the new adults to stick around.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I want to acknowledge that the land my farm occupies is rightfully Catawba land. I firmly believe that the reason this land is so fertile and full of diverse life is due to their stewardship for so long.
