Lain Iwakura - Haibane Renmei styled Garage Kit figure

Lain Iwakura wearing a simple white dress, adorned with a golden halo on top of her head and off-white angel wings on her back. This is a "garage kit" figure, AKA fan-made. It was sold on the Chinese shopping website Xianyu by a fan of Lain.

A fun fact about this DVD: The disc's matrix readout actually says "LPR-309", the title of the disc! This is pretty unique for Lain releases - most have generic matrix readouts.

The underside of the LPR-309 disc, showing the matrix readout text "LPR-309 A-04"

A photo I took back in 2018 at an anime convention - this Lain cel was being sold for $800 USD. At the time, I thought it was insanely expensive... these days, it seems like a pretty good deal.

A photo of an animation cel from Serial Experiments Lain. This cel contains spoilers from the end of the show, be warned. It features Lain as the alien peeking into her room, and was priced at $799.99 USD. It is affixed to the wall with a binder clip, somewhat crazy for such an expensive cel.

Did you know? The official genre of the Lain PS1 game is "サイコストレッチウェア", which roughly translates to "psychostretchware" In an interview, Yoshitoshi ABe teased that the use of this genre actually caused the game to be rejected from a game review magazine, who said they couldn't categorize it!

Abe :
Speaking of books, wasn't she rejected for a review by a famous game magazine? When Ueda was asked about the genre, he said something like "Psycho stretch wear" or something, and they were like "I can't categorize it!"

(laughs)

Abe :
I was really looking forward to it, but when I wondered "How many points would it get?", it was in the margin...

Ueda :
It's better than getting a zero (laughs).

Konaka :
No, you should just aim for the lowest score (laughs).

4Gamer :
There are many titles that are legendary for their low scores, but this one was not selected!

One other cool thing about the Lain PS1 website is the insight into how the game was initially presented to audiences. While machine translation likely isn't doing this justice, I thought the sentence "users will have to...discover their own Lain and experience her charm" was really cool.

Based on a network, "Lain" boasts a unique worldview and high-quality visuals that are reminiscent of "Twin Peaks" and "NIGHT HEAD" .
It has already attracted attention with the TV series that will begin airing this July and the feature pages of magazines where it is already being serialized.
The TV series will depict Lain and the many incidents that surround her, but in the game, the user will have to search for Lain's records scattered within the interface and follow her actions to discover their own Lain and feel her charm. It will surely provide
a new excitement never before seen in games, and a new charm of Lain that was not seen in the TV series.
