I didn't read anything negative about my design, so we can easily agree on that. ;-) The point is that I often read comments leaning towards conventional extruder / auger designs. I wanted to clarify that sometimes "old knowledge" has to be discarded if you want to develop something new. Thanks!

With the constant pitch of the wood screw, the gap must be wider, to allow backward bleeding of the (partially) molten plastic. The material is forwarded by the solid powder on the cold end. Yes, my extruder is different from industrial extruders in many ways and it took me a while to make it work.

Why wouldn't you use a wood screw? Because it is too cheap or too simple while working better than any conventional auger? I have been working with injection molding machines as well and they are made for injecting plastic or continuously extrude material like with film manufacturing.

I did things like that in the years of development, but the unmodified screw works best. You are allowed to start your own experimentation and prove me wrong. 😉

Well, I worked hard to create a really simple extruder that works reliably with a normal wood screw from the hardware store. Fiddling with that screw geometry adds complexity to the design. In the years of development I did so, but always came back to the simple, unmodified screw.
