WTOP News Trump administration files lawsuit to block possible Democratic win in Alaska Senate race wtop.com/national/2026/10/trump-adm…

Trump administration sues to block possible Democratic win in Alaska Senate race
The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit to block certification of the Senate race in Alaska if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses the contest while another candidate with the same name is on the ballot, kicking off what many have feared could become a lengthy battle between the U.S. government and states over certifying an election where the president’s party is struggling. Many in both parties believe the fight over control of the Senate could come down to Alaska, where Sullivan faces Democrat Mary Peltola, a former congresswoman. Also on the Alaska ballot is a Daniel J. Sullivan from the tiny fishing community of Petersburg. He has said he decided to run on his own, but Republicans have contended he is a Democratic plant to siphon votes away from their candidate. The lawsuit Thursday by Republican President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice in federal court in Alaska demands that the state be blocked from certifying a Peltola win if Daniel J. remains on the ballot. “The United States accordingly brings this lawsuit to protect the integrity of the 2026 Senate election in Alaska,” the lawsuit says, contending that federal law requires states to protect the integrity of federal elections. The legal challenge came 11 days before the Nov. 3 election and months after the final ballot was set. The Alaska Supreme Court rejected a previous Republican effort to remove Daniel J. Sullivan from the ballot, and the state’s Republican officials made the decisions about how to list him on the ballot. He will appear without a party designation next to his name, while the senator will be listed as the Republican incumbent. Alaska’s ranked choice voting system also will allow voters to select both of the men if confused. ## Peltola and Sen. Sullivan were top vote-getters in nonpartisan primary The senator received more than 68,000 votes in the August primary, while the challenging Sullivan got 4,107, about 2% of the total vote. Peltola, who had previously served one term in the House, was the top vote-getter in the nonpartisan primary. Both parties expect that whoever wins in November will do so by a tight margin in a state of 738,000 people. The senator’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment nor did Daniel J. Sullivan, whose presence on the ballot is at issue in the lawsuit. “Donald Trump knows that Dan Sullivan is going to lose the election, so now his Department of Justice is filing a sham lawsuit to overturn the will of Alaska voters and steal an election when he loses,” said Devan Barber, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. The Department of Justice has increasingly been used to bolster the president’s political operation, targeting his enemies and suing Democratic-controlled states before the election. Democrats and many voting rights advocates have long feared that the administration will try to block certification of elections that Trump’s party loses, much as he unsuccessfully tried to do when he lost the White House race to Democrat Joe Biden. U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said that was unlikely outside of extreme circumstances. “It is not DOJ’s intention to, and it’s never our intention to, improperly interfere with elections or the state certification process,” he told reporters Thursday in Virginia before the lawsuit was filed. The lawsuit was signed by Associate U.S. Attorney General Stanley Woodward, who represented Trump allies and Jan. 6 defendants before becoming one of the top appointees at the department. ## Constitution gives states the power to run elections Derek Muller, a law professor at the University of Notre Dame, said the lawsuit would likely only kick in if Republicans narrowly lost the Alaska Senate race and that it probably would not survive long. “The statute simply doesn’t let the Department of Justice enjoin certification,” Muller said. “The lawsuit could well be mooted by a wide Democratic victory or a narrow Republican one, and if not, the court will likely dismiss it next month.” The U.S. Constitution grants states the power to run their own elections. Elections for federal office like the Senate must comply with standards set by Congress. That division of power has frustrated Trump, who repeatedly has tried to seize control of election procedures through executive orders that courts have blocked. The final step for a state election is formally certifying the winner, the act that the administration’s lawsuit seeks to prevent, it requests, “pending an investigation to determine whether votes cast for. Daniel J. Sullivan were meant to be cast for Senator Sullivan.” The process in Alaska is complicated by the state’s ranked choice voting system, which Trump opposes, and many expect it to take weeks before a winner is known. Also on the state’s ballot is an initiative to repeal that system. ## Trump has stepped up complaints about a ballot with dueling Sullivans Trump has complained about Daniel J. Sullivan’s presence on the ballot, making reference to it during a rally in Alaska this month and in repeated social media posts, including one this week where he called it “CHEATING.” “We are looking at powerful legal options to remove the fraudulent Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. from the Ballot, and holding the Democrats accountable for their Election Interference, in the pursuit of Justice and Fairness,” the president wrote on Wednesday. Clogging a ballot with third party candidates to siphon off votes from the other major party is a long-standing tactic in the country’s two-party system. Republicans have been linked to an effort to persuade Ohio voters to support a socialist in that state’s Senate race, which could help Republican Sen. Jon Husted fend off a challenge from former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown. ___ Associated Press writer Ali Swenson in New York contributed to this report.

Gizmodo Hot Dogs, Gelato, Bacon, Salmon, Chocolate, and Deli Meat All Recalled in Recent Days gizmodo.com/hot-dogs-gelato-bacon-s…
gizmodo.com
Hot pestilence summer seems to be transitioning into recall fall. There has been a flood of food-related recalls in the U.S. in recent days, covering things like smoked salmon, cheese, gelato, chocolate, and 1.5 million pounds of meat products. The chocolate has been recalled because someone found a piece of glass in theirs. ## 1.5 Million Pounds of Meat From Kayem Foods Kayem Foods Inc. issued a nationwide recall of over 1.5 million pounds of meat on Saturday because the products experienced “temperature abuse during storage,” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). That’s another way of saying they were kept at an appropriately cold temperature. “The problem was discovered after the firm received a retail customer complaint regarding warm product temperatures at point of delivery on October 1, 2026,” according to the press release from FSIS. “The establishment investigated and determined that they stored various RTE meat and poultry products in a warehouse cooler that experienced temperature deviations.” The recall impacts a diverse array of meat products, including hot dogs, bacon, deli meat, liverwurst, roast beef, brisket, and chicken sausage, among others. The meats were also sold under a wide variety of brand names, including Kayem, Al Fresco, Triple M, McKenzie Country Classics, and Genoa. FSIS has a 27-page PDF on its website with photos of the products that have been impacted by the recall. There have been no reports of illnesses, but the food safety agency is concerned that these products could be in consumer refrigerators. Anyone who finds these meat products in their homes is encouraged not to consume them and either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. ## Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces Lidl US has recalled 16-ounce tubs of Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces over the weekend because of the potential presence of listeria. The gelato was sold from July 19 to Oct. 15 of this year, according to a notice published on the FDA’s website. The gelato was distributed to retailers in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. The best by date is listed as March 26, 2028. ## Family Farmstead Dairy Raw Cheddar Cheese Family Farmstead Dairy has recalled one specific lot of raw cheddar cheese after testing in Maryland found the presence of E. coli, according to a press release from the FDA. E. coli can cause diarrhea in many healthy people, but some people have a more severe reaction and get a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). The cheddar cheese has a best-by date of July 22, 2026, and no illnesses have been reported. The cheese was sold at retail stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts. Consumers who purchased the cheese are being told to return it at the point of purchase for a refund. Consumers who may have questions can email the company at: [email protected]. ## Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. has recalled its Starfish Seafood Premium smoked salmon over concerns that it may be contaminated with listeria, according to an announcement from the FDA. The listeria was identified through routine testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The smoked salmon was sold in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Consumers who purchased the smoked salmon are being told to return it to wherever they bought the product for a full refund. Any questions can be directed to Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at 718-858-6720, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, according to the FDA. ## Gearharts Fine Chocolates Gearharts Fine Chocolates has been recalled after broken glass was found in the finished product, according to the FDA, and has been classified as a Class II recall, meaning it’s “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” The chocolates have best-by dates in Oct. 2026, and consumers are encouraged not to consume them and to return them to the place where they were purchased for a full refund. No injuries have been reported. The chocolate was distributed in a wide variety of states, including California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Long Beach Post Neighbors rush to defend man after ICE agents break his arm, witnesses say lbpost.com/news/immigration/ice-age…
lbpost.com
Neighbors in North Long Beach rushed out of their homes yesterday and blocked federal immigration agents from detaining a man they had just violently knocked to the ground, according to first-hand accounts from four residents who spoke to the Long Beach Post. The man is a U.S. citizen named Ricardo Gonzalez who lives near where he was detained, according to neighbors and an online fundraiser started by his family. He was riding an e-bike near Elm Avenue and 56th Street on Saturday afternoon when an agent jumped out of an unmarked car and tackled him, according to a neighbor who asked to be identified only by his first name, Joe. (Other accounts online said agents rammed Gonzalez with their car. The Post could not locate any video of this or anyone who said they witnessed it first-hand. KTLA later aired video showing the agents’ vehicle veering toward Gonzalez, but it’s unclear if they hit him.) The agent then accused Gonzalez of throwing something at their car, Joe said. Agents tased Gonzalez twice while he was on the ground, and one agent knelt on his back while Gonzalez yelled in pain and said his arm was broken, according to two neighbors who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal. As residents came outside to see what was going on, they started yelling and honking, alerting more neighbors. The area was already on edge, Joe said, because eight or so unmarked law enforcement vehicles had been parked in the neighborhood since early that morning. He said his wife at one point had even called 911 to report the vehicles and ask if they could move because they were blocking multiple one-way streets. Volunteers with anti-ICE rapid response groups had also brought loudspeakers to warn about the vehicles and urge everyone to stay inside. Instead, when neighbors heard the growing confrontation with agents, many intervened. Link “If they try to take one of us, they’re going to have to take all of Long Beach,” said Patricia Velazquez, who has lived in the area for more than three decades. Cellphone video shows roughly 50 people yelling expletives at masked agents who were carrying handguns and wearing vests that said “ICE.” Neighbors demanded to see a warrant, dragged trash cans behind the agents’ vehicles or stood in front of them, blocking them from driving off. One agent made racist comments to the mostly Latino crowd, saying they didn’t “look legal,” according to Joe. They also used pepper spray on the crowd, neighbors said. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to questions about the confrontation. At one point during the roughly hour-long standoff, agents grabbed two women — both U.S. citizens — and put them in the backs of different vehicles, according to two neighbors. They were soon freed, according to Joe. He described the crowd distracting agents while people sneaked behind their vehicles to open their doors. Long Beach police soon showed up. In a statement, they said federal agents had called for help providing medical aid to someone and dealing with a crowd that had vandalized vehicles. One officer attempted to step in immediately but was held back by his partner, one neighbor said. Video shows federal agents then allowed Gonzalez to leave with the Long Beach officers after agents searched his wallet and looked at his identification. An LBPD officer uncuffed Gonzalez and took him to a nearby fire station. Paramedics then took him to a hospital. Gonzalez is a Long Beach resident who, until recently, worked for the city, Long Beach City Councilmember Tunua Thrash-Ntuk said in a statement. He was riding through his own neighborhood, she said, “when he was racially profiled and violently assaulted by ICE agents—leaving him with broken bones and crushing medical bills.” In their online fundraiser, Gonzalez’s family says he is a hardworking man who supports his family. He is still recovering, they said, and asked for help spreading the word about what agents did to him. Long Beach Congressman Robert Garcia said he was “proud of the neighbors who documented and stood up for the family being terrorized by ICE.” “ICE agents brutally attacked and broke the arm of a North Long Beach resident and U.S. citizen,” he said in a statement. “The videos are horrific and should concern not just our community but the country.” Mayor Rex Richardson said he is outraged by agents’ actions and is demanding answers from the Department of Homeland Security.
