#TCMParty I’m not on here much because of illness + my vision varies from poor to absent these days, although occasionally I can see ok in my right eye. Gotta reserve “seeing time” for survival needs as much as possible. Wish I could post all my great finds like this ⤵️ but I just can’t. Miss y’all!

One of the features included in that historic 1939 TV broadcast was a scene from the Broadway play Mamba’s Daughters by DuBose Heyward. Georgette Harvey, Ethel Waters, & Fredi Washington reprised their roles. Here they are at the Empire Theatre in a publicity shot for the play a few months earlier.

I am losing my sight and can’t see this very well, but they are standing together indoors. Ethel Waters and Fredi Washington’s faces are close together.

Yesterday was the 86th anniversary of singer and actress #EthelWaters’ variety TV special, “The Ethel Waters Show.” She was the first Black American to host a TV show! She was closeted by then, but she’d lived openly as a lesbian in Harlem before gaining wider fame. #PrideMonth 🏳️‍🌈

🇲🇽🇺🇸 Walls & Mirrors: Mexican Americans, Mexican Immigrants, & the Politics of Ethnicity by David G. Gutiérrez, 1995 Read this when it came out. One of the best history books I’ve ever read. I’d learned maybe 1% in high school, including in Texas history classes. I’m excited that I found it on Kindle!

Cover of the book
WALLS and MIRRORS
Mexican Americans, Mexican Immigrants, and the Politics of Ethnicity
by DAVID G. GUTIERREZ
Cover is red with letters in black and white

here is most of the text from the back cover, not including some of the recommendation quotes:

Covering more than a century of American history, Walls and Mirrors examines the ways that continuous immigration from Mexico transformed-and continues to shape-the political, social, and cultural life of the American Southwest. Taking a fresh approach to one of the most divisive political issues of our time, David Gutiérrez explores the ways that the constant influx of Mexican immigrants influenced Mexican Americans' sense of social and cultural identity and thus shaped their politics and the trajectory of the Mexican American civil rights movement.
Gutiérrez draws on an extensive body of primary and secondary sources to challenge some of the most cherished myths about U.S. immigration and labor policies, the adaptation and incorporation of immigrants into society, and the nature of the ethnic Mexican experience in the Southwest.

"An outstanding contribution to Chicano studies and American history in general. ... With balanced, nuanced writing and superior scholarship, the author has provided a first-rate interpretive framework for understanding the political and cultural dilemma faced by Mexican Americans in American society."
-George Sanchez, University of Michigan

David Niven is priceless in #BluebeardsEighthWife! It’s one of my favorite roles for him. So funny! Gary Cooper, Claudette Colbert, and Edward Everett Horton are all perfect as well, but David Niven steals the scenes he’s in, or at least most of them! #Lubitsch

Richard Carlson turned down the lead male role in “Born Yesterday” for a supporting role in “Try and Get Me!” but William Holden was one of his best friends, so I don’t think he minded too much how much more successful that film was! (He was first choice for Golden Boy too, another Holden hit!)

🤣 Richard Carlson will be haunted with Hugh Marlowe confusion forever, I fear, unless I manage to get back to work and raise his profile! Then everyone will see his uniqueness and wonder how they ever got them mixed up. Like Jake & Elwood, I’m on a mission from God! 🕶️ 😁 @richardcarlson.bsky.social

If you’ve never listened to Charles Mingus, a good place to start is the first track, “II B.S.” on his 1964 album MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS. This was a new, shorter version of his 1957 masterpiece “Haitian Fight Song.” Also has way more brass. 🔥 youtu.be/7PnE6X027OE?...

I missed Charles Mingus’ Birthday. IMO he was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. Easily my favorite bassist of all time, from any genre. I love bass, so he’s at the top of a long list. He was a talented pianist too. A genius who died too young because of f*cking #ALS. 👑 #Mingus #Jazz

🏆 American hero Senator Cory Booker is now giving the longest speech in US Senate history! Racist Strom Thurmond previously held the record with his shameful 24-hour, 18-minute filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. New Jersey’s first Black senator burned Thurmond’s record to the ground! 👏👏👏
