I don't identify with her, but comparing her to flat-earthers is unfair. She has a PhD in physics and published well during her career. And yes, she has a negative outlook on academia that sometimes turns into bias....but it's still worth listening to, outside one's bubble.

Well, there certainly is a certain Sabine Hossenfelder on YouTube, who questions the funding model culture of physics, even if results are replicable. And she recently also criticised CogNeuro for ignoring data....

Just doing a First-Pass check as an editor on what looks like a paper-mill, citation-ring manuscript. While they report data from an L2 training study, their declaration on data availability says: "No dataset was generated or analyzed in this study" Editing got wild in the last three years.

Ghent university has one strong argument. He uses the publicity to lobby for his "race science" as a Ghent scholar. However, he isn't employed to work on that, so he misrepresents Ghent university. And his "race science" ignores a lot of expertise in behavioural genetics.

I was planning to cycle to AMLaP in Saarbrücken from Frankfurt. This means I have to cross the Rhine somewhere, and Komoot suggested a ferry. Now it seems I might just be able to wade through it, given its 65cm depth.

I happen to do some training with ultra athletes. Every serious runner logs his runs with a GPS watch and uploads them to a training platform, like Strava. That not being there is such a huge red flag!!

Depends on whether you focus on acoustic (vowels easier, just spectral differences) or articulatory (consonants clearer) first.

Searching for reviewers, I just found a recent paper in the journal I'm editing for — on almost exactly my topic. Cool! Less cool: the author has opted out of reviewing for the journal. If you're publishing in a venue, you should be willing to review for it. Or is Kant too much of an old white man?

What happens when a speech sound is both everywhere and nowhere? @holmit.bsky.social shows that glottal stop /ʔ/ differently affects lexical access in #German and #Maltese, in ways that are counterintuitive to its phonemic status in those languages. doi.org/10.16995/lab... #LabPhon #openaccess

Definitely, there is not necessarily an overlap in people, but social constructivism has made it acceptable to consider multiple truths a thing. I'd go even further and argue that Trump was only possible due to what social constructivism has unleashed.

Constructivism allows the concept of multiple truths, thereby enabling to push aside any data that don't fit with the theory by saying that there are alternative facts.

So there is this weird pattern of discrimination (definitely explicit, no IAT needed) in the Maltese rental market. Maltese landlords often reject prospective tenants that are .. (drumroll).... Maltese. Never heard that one before.

Going to be a Bayesian nitpicker here, re the body-image study. The fact that some tests were ns does NOT mean they were inconsistent with the hypothesis. For any study, if we have 50% power and half of the tests are significant, this is in fact very STRONG evidence for the underyling hypothesis.

I was using forced alignment short utterances from a speech-production experiment. Using recordings that had been noise-reduced, the results were unusuable, so I tried the original, noisy recordings. Those worked very well. Can anyone here explain why noise-reduction makes forced-alignment worse?

Most visual-world eye-tracking study need hundreds of images. That's quite a laborious task. Sine openAI can generate images (chatGPT + Dall-E), I managed to batch generate images via an R-script, which I shared via osf (osf.io/apcyb/). I hope this is helpful.

Question on the ethics of using ChatGPT in science writing. As an L2 speaker of English, I sometimes find a sentence not sounds well. In that case, I ask ChatGPT to reformulate (providing the original sentence). Is that cheating or OK? Do I need to disclose this at submission (Elsevier asks...)?

One issue with X is that it seems rather naive to me to assume that the algorithm is not rigged to favour the political opinions of Elon Musk. To me, X is quite likely-just has been shown for TikTok-a propaganda machine. I'd pre-register that prediction!
