I wanted to try and make another ring, this time a bit thicker. Hopefully that makes snapping less likely. This one is made from Queensland Maple. I boiled it in wax so it's fully sealed. Just in time for Mother's Day too!

Only a little bit of this cutout left. It's taken me an embarrassing amount of time to realise that I can just use the saw to speed this part up. Good thing one of my remaining brain cells still thinks. Albeit only in the gaps of my heartbeat.

Starting to cut her out. This is going to take a while. I expect lots of tool sharpening in the very near future

Took a while but I think I'm just about done with the sketch. She's a Mantled Beast It'll be interesting to see how this one turns out

It's about time I started another project. This one's a little different to a proot. Just had to plane the sides flat before I start drafting The wood is the ever gorgeous Eucalyptus Marginata. Also known as Jarrah You can do many things with Jarrah. Unfortunately, hot chocolate isn't one of them
A block of Jarrah sitting in the clamps of a vice. A small block plane is sitting on the top right of the image and wood shavings are above the block. The Jarrah is the same colour as chocolate! Doesn't taste like chocolate though. It tastes like wood. Must be made from some sort of wood.

The visor is basically done, it just needs to be sanded to spec. I've started work on the rest of the proot so I can just do bulk sanding as a final step. I won't put the fur marks on this one, I think the wood grain does a pretty good job of that already.

Shaping out the visor. Not looking too bad.

The proot is cut out of its rectangular prison. Squaring up the edges is next, after which I can transfer the design from one side to the other.

Say hello to Hollow, my Fursona! The design is inspired by my most favourite wood, Silky Oak. My two very best friends helped me out in drawing and designing him. #furry #furryart

Halfway to the halfway point. If only there was some way of multiplying fractions. Oh well. This quarter sawn Silky Oak is an absolute joy to work with.

It's about time I make another proot. This one already has a home. Using my most favourite wood, Northern Silky Oak. Regular updates as usual

Just a quick little project I made for my Mother. It's a little leaf bowl for jewellery. It's just enough for a couple of rings and a necklace.

Big fella. I estimate a 10cm legspan. She's big and she won't eat much of my food. She will eat cockroaches though. I'd rather have a big spider than cockroaches. Her name is Shelob.

The heart pendant is done! I'm quite pleased with how this one ended up. I can't wait to give these to my friends

I've sanded and applied finish. I think it's really really good. I need to figure out how where the cord for the necklace part will go and then it'll be done! I forgot to mention, the wood is Mahogany.

I am not exaggerating, this took all day. it was definitely worth the effort. I just need to do a symmetry check, do a final sand and put a bit of a bevel on the edges. The bottom doesn't line up perfectly, but she'll be right.

Got 'em out, just have to get them to slot together now. This is probably the most difficult part to do
031
Hollow @hollowcarvings.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
Got the outline done. I may or may not have put the two pieces too close together (hint: yes).I reckon a coping saw will work

Hollow @hollowcarvings.bsky.social · 18/11/2025
I've been a bit slack as of late. I've been tossing between a little wolf face and a heart pendant. If all goes well, this will be a gift. The mismatching grain is a bit of a bugger. I'll also have to be very careful with my sanding so they slot together well. I'll just have to get keen.

It's almost done, next is sanding and details. Lots of sanding. I've got to get more sand.
A protogens woodcarving that is almost complete. Note the lack of sand and tails.

Chipping away as best I can. The visor is essentially done and ready for details and a good sanding.

This wood is very beautiful. I'm thoroughly impressed. Still need to do work on the visor, its a bit uneven. I had to edit the photo a bit to highlight the two tones of this wood, it's much more obvious in person. I think I was lucky enough to have heartwood and sapwood in the one block.

It's been a little while. I've started progress again on the newest visor. I might highlight the crack with black epoxy. Two very close friends wanted to give carving a try, so I've been walking them through a beginner project. It'll take a while to finish, but I'll share what they've made too.

Went for a walk.
A landscape photo of a river. The sun is about 20° from the horizon on the left hand side. It is obscured by clouds and has an orange hue. There are mountains which have some fog on them spanning from the middle to the right of the image. The river itself takes up majority of the frame and in its reflection you can see the sun and mountains ad well as the trees that line it's bank.

Behold! 56 minutes of slowly making woodchips, condensed to just under 2 minutes of very quickly making woodchips. Toward the end, I found a fairly large crack which spans about 3cm. Shockingly, this is less than optimal. I hope my wood glue is thin enough to go through a hypodermic needle.

Hollow @hollowcarvings.bsky.social · 16/07/2025
Ready to start the visor. I've recorded almost the whole process this far. I'll see how fast I can speed it up. And then I'll look into getting a cute furry to dance in the corner. Hopefully I can condence 3 hours to less than 2 minutes in a way that doesn't trigger epilepsy.

Work has begun on the newest member of my little proot collection. I tried recording this tiny bit with my neolithic-era GoPro to see if it still works. Unsurprisingly, it's some of the most boring slop you'll ever watch. I'll have to sprinkle in a couple hours of paint drying to keep it interesting
A protogens side profile drawn into a block of Queensland Maple (Flindersia Brayleyana). This wood is absolutely stunning, but I want to hide the really gorgeous grain from you, so side profile for now. It's also a lot nicer to carve than I originally thought.

I'm going to need a bigger saw. Just kidding, I'm very stubborn. This one block 120mm thick, that saw is best for 60mm. I'll just take a break at the halfway point and hope the saw doesn't notice it's the same block. Also, this saw is for dovetails. I don't support animal cruelty though.

A little green tree frog snuck into the rain gauge. It's got a cutie licence, so I can't evict it.

Didn't work :( I'll make a new one when I've got more scrap wood. But I'm fresh out of scrap wood. I want to try using a block of Queensland maple for my next project. It'll be the old bread and butter, a Protogen. Same shape as the Jarrah one because of its aerodynamic proportions.

The Celtic knot is done! This took way longer to make than I anticipated. I'll hang it from the rearview mirror... Maybe it'll balance out the roo bar and spotties. You won't be able to see it, but it'll be there.

Bush bashing through some scrub and stumbled across this little guy. It's Freshwater Crocodile. Their cousins, salt water crocs, are the ones to look out for. Freshies are mostly harmless, but they're still not to be messed with, even this juvenile.

After months of research, I can confidently conclude that watching scary videos while woodcarving is NOT a good idea. Further findings suggest I have the combined IQ of all known inhabitants of the Mariana trench (0), and will not learn from past mistakes.

The epoxy is still curing, so I started this Celtic knot. It's a bit small. Very small. I don't have tools tiny enough to sand out the holes. I'm going to look for abrasive cord. My end goal is something I can hang off my rear view mirror. I'm in desperate need of a projectile for when I crash.

I've tried regular wood glue twice now, not enough surface area for it to stick properly. I've submerged the cracked part in epoxy resin. This should work a little better.

The heart pendant is done. I didn't have any nice cord laying around so I used my knitting yarn. They'll likely replace it with leather.

It's a bit unclear in the image, but the ring has a crack in it. I was expecting this to happen at some point. It's split along the end grain. I've enjoyed wearing it and I'll try to fix it.

I've been trying to photograph the paw for a while now, I can't figure out how to make it look 'good' through the photos. It's getting late and my phone's almost out of charge. I'll experiment with taking videos of it tomorrow. Until then, here is the best photo i managed to get.
A paw sitting on a scrunched up cloth. Very fancy, like an 'Eau de Toilette' ad. You know, where they drop the perfume bottle on a piece of fabric and it scrunched up and looks fancy. That's what I was going for. Why the hell do they call light perfume 'toilet water' but french. Who the hell sprays themselves down with toilet water to smell better.

A little experiment with some home made ebonising solution. The left was pre-treated with tea. Pros: It worked. Easy to apply and worked quickly. Cons: It smells like rust and vinegar. I don't know where to use this. It obscures the grain a little too much.
