Imagine where gas prices would be if Republicans (and Conservatives in Canada) took climate change seriously in 1990's/2000's. Actually you don't need to imagine it. We'd be an electrified economy driving electric cars powered by solar and wind energy and you wouldn't care what the price of gas was.

Evidence that AI should remain artificial intelligence and not super intelligence. Umm, how in the world does Pierre think this makes him look Prime Ministerial?

I realize many American scientists, researchers, doctors and other highly skilled workers are leaving the U.S. for Canada but I'm not sure it amounts to 'millions & millions'. In truth, Trump is trying to rile up Canada's far right ahead of the Alberta referendum to divide Canada. He's desperate.

Trump's Presidency in summary: We need nothing from Canada. We kidnapped the Venezuelan president and stole their oil so we won't need oil from Canada. We tried the same in Iran and disrupted the global oil/fertilizer supply. We'll get Potash fertilizer from Belarus so we don't need Canada's Potash.

This should not be surprising. The boycotts actually started slowly in Dec '24 before Trump was even President when Trump questioned Canada's ability to exist sans U.S., grew in Jan '25 when he threatened to use 'economic force' to annex Canada and took off when he first imposed tariffs in Feb '25.

The great dealmaker announces a deal to secure rights to a military base on Greenland, rights he already had and guarantee rivals will not occupy Greenland which was not a threat to happen. More succinctly, the great dealmaker successfully negotiated a deal to maintain the status quo.

Guns/butter have been around a lot longer than AI so it's an odd comparison. If Avi wants new laws/regulations he should consider becoming an MP. AI is an international problem. Would be great if we could coordinate our laws/regulations with partner nations for maximize impact. Maybe with EU?

Dear Americans: When Republicans, who are running $2 trillion deficits, talk about giving you dividends they are telling you they will steal money from your grand children to put in your left pocket so you don't notice the President and his billionaire cronies stealing money from your right pocket.

When your argument is 'it will hurt them more than us' you know you are losing the war. It's their argument in Iran. It's Russia's argument in Ukraine. What matters is Canadians have more resolve to win the war. We've had that mindset for 18+ months. We have the resolve and will to outlast Trump.

When boycotts last a year and a half it is no longer a boycott, it becomes a change of behaviour. Canadians are travelling differently. Canadians are buying and consuming stuff differently. Canadians are thinking and behaving differently. This will be a lot harder to fully undo than just a boycott.

David Johnson @hockeyanalysis.com · 07/09/2026
This no longer surprises me but the general acceptance by Americans that their President behaves this way instead of actually doing his job still surprises me. I understand a lot of Americans dislike Trump but I don't think they truly understand how rapid their standing in the world is in decline.

Carney doesn't need a kerfuffle to gain support because Trump, Bessent, Lutnick, et al. unite Canadians every time they open their mouth and spew insults towards Canada.

This Evangelista to NJ trade makes little sense for both teams. I guess Nashville gets decent value in return but it doesn't make a lot of sense for them to trade young NHLers just breaking out. For NJ I'm not sure they needed to use their limited cap space on another winger.

They still haven't learned the Iran lesson. We don't need subs. We can just turn off the oil and electricity and wait for Americans to rebel against government due to $6 gas and blackouts in North Eastern States.

Dear Canadian media. Trump is weak, petty, shallow and trying to distract from his failures as a dealmaker. That the entire story behind the Lake of Ontario name change. Let's not pretend it is anything significant or anything Canada should do anything about.

Today Canada was hosting the Indian Finance Minister working on a new trade deal and Carney is planning a trip to Europe to forge closer ties and trade diversification. Meanwhile Trump thinks calling Lake Ontario Lake America will strike fear in Canadians forcing them to submit to his every demand.

Does he not realize that every time he opens his mouth thousands of Made in USA products get boycotted by Canadians or does he just not care? The correct answer of course is both.

Trump admits he himself made last minute demands to change the deal he announced 3 days prior. His word means nothing and he seems proud of it. www.cnn.com/2026/08/25/b...
Trump suggested in a brief call with CNN’s Jim Sciutto that the US had added conditions in the 11th hour.

“That sounds like me,” Trump responded when asked about Canadian officials’ assertions that the US made late-stage demands, adding, “they have to pay a fair amount. And if they don’t pay a fair amount, we won’t make a deal. That’s fine.”

An important message in these counter tariffs and business/worker support programs being announced today is that they are designed to last 3-4 years. So, beyond Trump. Carney will wait Trump out if need be. While Trump considers renaming lakes, Canada is planning for the long haul.

One angle I haven't seen discussed in this US-Canada trade dispute is Carney's investment conference in September. Yes, there has been discussion about the uncertain trade situation with the US negatively impacting investments but I think there is a flip side to this too.

Canada's response to trade war is to support businesses/workers, buy Canadian, boycott American, make trade deals with the rest of the world, align more closely with European/Asian allies and reduce dependence on the U.S. Trump's response is to threaten to change the name of a lake.

Carney's "they want to break us so they can own us" message is in full display here. Culture and language to divide us. Tariffs and economic demands to break our economy. Restrictions on our ability to make other trade deals and preferential access to our resources to reduce our sovereignty.

David Johnson @hockeyanalysis.com · 23/08/2026

As I said earlier, it would not surprise me if he TACOs before markets open. The fact that Trump has been silent on the issue is telling.
120
David Johnson @hockeyanalysis.com · 22/08/2026
This is true. The reality is the disagreement is less a disagreement between Canada and the United States as it is a disagreement between the United States and the United States from a few years ago and a disagreement between Trump 2.0 and Trump 1.0. Trump doesn't like the deals he himself made.
110
David Johnson @hockeyanalysis.com · 22/08/2026
Carney is basically announcing the Canada-US economic partnership is dead. I'm sure the door is open to re-engage in discussions but it seems clear it will only happen when Trump comes ready to have serious negotiations.

Challenge to all Canadians. Next time you are in the grocery store, check all labels. If it is American put it back on the shelf. If there is no Canadian option buying products from any other country is fine too. Just don't buy American.

My prediction about Friday bad news came true. Markets are the one thing that can influence Trump. Friday night news means two days before markets open, two days for Trump administration to try to ease investors concerns and two days to for Trump to decide to TACO if the market reaction looks bad.

The way Canada wins this trade war with the U.S. is to make it painful for Americans to the point they force Trump to back down on his tariff policy that inflates prices and hurts jobs. Making a deal to reduce tariffs just makes that a longer process. Best to just rip the bandaid off.
