Same here. Had to take at least 3 breaks and was fully crying at that final montage.

I actually started a curated notated list of ones I would consider good. It is a short list.

Apparently there was an early cut with more jokes (too many according to Cregger). I'd bet the horn section was part of that. I think it turned out pretty perfect in the end but GOD I'd love to see the comedy cut.

Especially if the fight is between guys who aren't fighters. Just two dudes walloping each other with chairs.

loving the shapes on these! I think it's time to pull the trigger and get some 1mm+ chipboard. I've got a ton of 1/2 mm from ordering stamps so i guess I could just layer those, but that's just not as convenient.

I think one of my main critiques is you can tell Matt Dinniman isnt a wrestling fan, and him being one would have improved almost every aspect of the story.

020

HuMaNPeRSoN @hmnprsn.org · 21/09/2026

I blasted through all of them, so I'm extra qualified to talk shit/give credit where its due, haha. There are def things I like that I think he does well, but they only truly shine when they break away from telling us about their stat bonuses.

120

HuMaNPeRSoN @hmnprsn.org · 21/09/2026

I dont regret reading it, but also im always reluctant to recommend it. Really SO few of the jokes land.

110

HuMaNPeRSoN @hmnprsn.org · 21/09/2026

Theres a lot of inventory and experience point management shit that is just straight up bad storytelling and never pays off, but dinniman does provide the stuff that works in the genre as well. Namely, characters taking advantage of the rules and systems to do crazy things/break the game.

Kind of wild to think about how many extremely boring manga there are. I've read isekais so forgettable they all combine into a melange of tired tropes and indistinguishable heroines.

100

HuMaNPeRSoN @hmnprsn.org · 21/09/2026

You may be able to tolerate the jokes then. It was a struggle for me. It also helps if you can tolerate isekai tropes and endless tedious descriptions of game mechanics (in the first book specifically).

plus some additional samples that annoyed me. not included: every other time the beast boy writes at length about how noble and heroic his own ideals are.

some additional badly/weirdly written quotes from the book. please note the entire rest of the book is also badly/weirdly written.

Heres a taste of what it's like to read Jimmy Beast's book.

a bunch of examples from "the most dangerous games"where Jimmy beast is describing something in the format "Not a, not b, just y."
Some may consider this proof he used an AI chatbot. I don't care either way at this point. More than anything its just incredibly annoying.

HuMaNPeRSoN @hmnprsn.org · 14/09/2026

Finished jimmy beast's dreadful book. Stupid from start to finish AND annoyingly written. Unsurprisingly, it only serves as further evidence that there is something fundamentally wrong with Jimmy. The next thing I read is going to seem so damn good in comparison.

Upon review it looks like I gave most of them 3 to 3.5 stars with Sharpe's Honor and Sharpe's revenge being the worst ones. Sharpe's Regiment, the first two movies, and Waterloo were my favorites I think.

HuMaNPeRSoN @hmnprsn.org · 12/09/2026

I binged them all last year because of a certain series of silver bayonette battle report videos. There are two or 3 that I would say are pretty good. The others.. ehh. Mixed bag. Costumes: great. Sean Bean: never hotter.

Kenny vs Tanahashi wrestle kingdom 13 was what got me. My initial real love of the sport was via first few seasons of Lucha Underground though so AEW had me locked in from the jump.

Reading Jimmy Beast's dreadful book and the way this weirdo portrays himself (he is an active character) is pathological to the extreme. We joke, but I've never been more convinced there's something seriously wrong with that dude.

HuMaNPeRSoN @hmnprsn.org · 07/09/2026

I think up to ff12 the remasters/ports all have built-in options for speeding up the games and believe you me, it helps a lot. Some of the games really seemed to expect an unfortunate amount of grinding.
