"Transgender rights activists are spreading misinformation about guidance that protects single-sex spaces by claiming it erodes trans people’s rights, the equalities regulator has said." [Times page 2]
Trans activists ‘wrong over single-sex code’
Geraldine Scott - Assistant Political Editor
Transgender rights activists are spreading misinformation about guidance that protects single-sex spaces by claiming it erodes trans people’s rights, the equalities regulator has said.

Mary-Ann Stephenson, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), said criticism of its updated code of practice had made the “real alarm” felt by trans people worse by wrongly suggesting they had lost protections or would face sex checks.

Stephenson said women had also been affected by not having access to single-sex spaces. She said: “Women who believe that their right to privacy, dignity or safety have not been properly protected deserve to have those concerns taken seriously too.”

Last week the Liberal Democrats passed a conference motion branding the code discriminatory and “unworkable”.

At Labour’s conference Joanne Thomas, the general secretary of the Usdaw union and chairwoman of Labour Unions, said the law and the EHRC code would hurt trans and nonbinary people and argued that rights had been rolled back.

Stephenson said the code did not create new law or abolish protections for transgender people.

She said: “Recognising women’s need for access to single-sex services doesn’t require us to dismiss the rights of trans people. And recognising the vulnerability of trans people doesn’t require us to dismiss women’s concerns.”

The EHRC’s code of practice came into force in August, 16 months after the Supreme Court ruled that sex in relation to the Equality Act must be defined biologically. This means single-sex lavatories, changing rooms, hospital wards and refuges must be used based on a person’s birth sex, not the gender with which they identify.

The Good Law Project, which is backing a legal challenge against the code, accused the EHRC of producing “discriminatory” and “unworkable” guidance and said service providers which followed it would be “helping to strip trans pe…

Sonia Sodha in The Times crying about banning conversion practices
Conversion Practices Bill is a licence for trouble
Prime minister needs to ditch toxic legislation that threatens the rights of women and parents
Sonia Sodha @soniasodha

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. A maxim that has been embraced by campaigners for men to be able to intrude into female spaces and for children experiencing gender distress to be pushed down a risky medical pathway, all under the misleading banner of “trans rights”. These campaigners have lost some important battles. Their strategy of bullying female opponents out of their jobs and public life ran into problems when the courts made clear that this was unlawful discrimination. Then the Supreme Court clarified that men are never women for the purpose of using female-only facilities and services.

Meanwhile the medical consensus is finally shifting to an understanding that children experiencing transitory gender distress, often a product of other issues, should be able to access exploratory therapy rather than puberty-blocking drugs.

Now gender campaigners have opened a new front, pushing for legislation to ban so-called “conversion practices”. This innocuous-sounding but dangerous Trojan horse is designed to override legal protections for single-sex spaces and to threaten parents, teachers and healthcare professionals acting in children’s best interests. Worst of all, it was adopted in Labour’s 2024 manifesto, a quid pro quo for the party dropping self-ID.

There is a long and terrible history of same-sex-attracted people being subjected to conversion practices such as electroshock therapy and corrective rape. These practices are thankfully rare, and importantly already criminal.

As is anything constituting harassment or physical or sexual assault under criminal statute. Indeed, the minister who led the Lords debate simply listed a number of existing offences as justification for the bill and when pushed was unable to provide concrete examples of practices that should be — but are no…

Wes Streeting agreeing with Donald Trump on the front page of the Sunday Telegraph
Streeting: Trump right to demand Britain spend more on defence
The Sunday Telegraph4 Oct 2026By Rozina Sabur NATIONAL SECURITY EDITOR in Iceland

Wes Streeting and Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Iceland’s minister for foreign affairs
DONALD TRUMP is “absolutely right” to demand more of the UK on defence spending, Wes Streeting has said.

The Defence Secretary said Britain must be war-fighting ready by 2030 after Nato warned that Russia could strike a member of the transatlantic alliance by that date.

In an interview with The Telegraph after a summit of defence ministers in Keflavik, Iceland, Mr Streeting said: “We want to be deterring Russia, and we want to make sure that if deterrence fails, we’re ready to defeat our enemies.

“It’s why the Nato alliance is absolutely critical. Nato-first is our policy, but also it’s why I’ve been really keen to make clear to our friends in the United States of America that, as far as we’re concerned, President Trump and his administration have been absolutely right to demand more of the UK, more of Europe. We’ve got to step up and carry more of the responsibility for defending our own continent.”

He made the comments in the lead-up to the first Budget of Andy

Burnham’s premiership, with Labour MPs split over calls to cut the soaring welfare bill to find the money to boost defence.

John Healey, the Chancellor, has refused to chart a path to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030 despite resigning as Defence Secretary over the issue during Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership.

Mr Healey has signalled he will fully fund the Government’s defence investment plan in the upcoming Budget, but deferred outlining a pathway to 3 per cent to the 2027 spending review.

Despite that, Mr Streeting, his successor at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), insisted that Labour was “well on our way” to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence.

He said: “Bear in mind that when Labour came in, we were at 2.3 per cent. By next year, we’ll be at 2.7 per ce…

"A west Belfast woman who stabbed her abusive partner to death while he slept has won a legal bid to overturn her conviction for murder." [Belfast Telegraph]

Woman who killed abusive partner has murder conviction overturned
Belfast Telegraph3 Oct 2026ALAN ERWIN
A west Belfast woman who stabbed her abusive partner to death while he slept has won a legal bid to overturn her conviction for murder.

The Court of Appeal ruled yesterday that jurors were misdirected on Julie Ann Mcilwaine’s loss of control defence to the killing of James Joseph Crossley in March 2022.

Senior judges quashed th e guilty verdict and gave the prosecution two weeks to decide if it is to seek any retrial.

“We cannot be satisfied that the convictio n is safe,” Lady Chief Justice Dame Siobhan Keegan confirmed.

Mcilwaine (35), who has been serving a minimum 12-year jail term, wept on the video-link from Hydebank Prison as the ruling was delivered.

She admitted killing her partner but denied murder, claiming to have suffered a temporary loss of control as a victim of domestic abuse.

Mr Crossley (38) was stabbed up to 10 times in the chest and abdomen as he lay sleeping beside the couple’s young child at Mcilwaine’s former home in the Dunmurry area.

The pair had been in a relationship marred by emotional manipulation and coercive control.

At the time of his death Mr Crossley was on bail for an alleged assault against Mcilwaine and subject to a restraining orde rp rohibiting any contact with her.

Despite a period of separation, they had re-established their relationship by the night of the killing.

The court heard Mr Crossley took medication and went to sleep following arguments where he issued an ultimatum for Mcilwaine to choose between him and her family.

During police interviews the defendant stated that it all got on top of her and how she considered taking her own life.

She described taking a knife from the kitchen, returning to the bedroom and moving the child before repeatedly stabbing her sleeping partner.

ANOTHER MURDER AND
MUTILATION.

LONDON, TUESDAY.—The Central News learns that there was found in a recess of the foundations of the new police offices, Thames Embankment, the trunk of a female much decomposed, minus head, arms, and legs, tightly bound by a cord and wrapped in some kind of cloth. It is now at the Mortuary, Millbank Street. Dr. Bond, divisional surgeon, has made a preliminary examination. It has been suggested that the two arms recently found near Pimlico may belong to the trunk. The discovery was made by a man in the employ of the builder who has secured the contract for the erection of the new police headquarters upon the site of the abortive National Opera House speculation. The man had occasion to go into a vaulted cellar which was built by the contractor for the “Opera House” some years ago. He was first startled by the horrible stench which filled the place, and which caused him to look around to see whence it came. To his horror he saw a large mass of decomposed flesh, which on closer observation proved to be the headless, armless, legless trunk of a female.

"Ireland players have alleged that goalscorer Adam Idah was racially abused by Israel fans during the controversial Nations League match in Hungary on Sunday night." [Times]
Ireland accuse Israel fans of racist abuse
Paul Rowan - Irish Football Correspondent, Debrecen

Idah was the subject of chants by the Israel fans
Ireland players have alleged that goalscorer Adam Idah was racially abused by Israel fans during the controversial Nations League match in Hungary on Sunday night.

According to a Football Association of Ireland (FAI) spokesman, Jayson Molumby heard the chants before halftime and the midfielder asked the German referee, Harms Osmers, and the fourth official, Florian Exner, to “listen”.

Because Uefa’s protocol in that situation is to say the word “racism”, European football’s governing body said that no immediate action — such as a warning over the PA system — was taken.

However, the FAI has now said that it will go through the footage to find out if there is any evidence of the alleged abuse and, if so, demand a Uefa investigation into the treatment of Idah, 25, who plays for Swansea City.

There were also reports of confrontations in the tunnel between players, with the Israel captain, Manor Solomon, taking exception to what some Irish players were saying and the opposition bowing their heads during the Israeli national anthem.

In an angry rant after the game, Solomon vowed to get “revenge” on Ireland when the teams meet again on Sunday.

“They said nonsense [to us] during the game, I don’t want to talk about them,” Solomon said. “If I say what I think about them, I’ll probably be banned for a few games so I don’t want to say. Of course they hate us and we don’t like them. I’m already looking forward to the next game against them. What they did with the anthem? I’m not interested in them, we have a country that is ten times better than theirs, stronger, an amazing country with amazing people.

Unsolvable mystery on the front page of today's Times
The fairer sex? Men feel happier about their looks than women
Rhys Blakely - Science Editor
Men do not, in general, have a reputation for lingering in front of the mirror. Perhaps they do not need to: new research suggests they are happier than women about what they see in it.

Two studies involving more than 1,000 people asked participants to score their own looks on a scale from zero to 100. Men scored themselves, on average, between 6 and 8 per cent higher than women.

Sex was not the only dividing line.

Britons rated themselves less attractive than Americans, Australians, Canadians and South Africans. The researchers suggested in the journal Evolutionary Psychology that British modesty may help explain the gap. People who scored better on a cognitive ability test also tended to rate themselves as less attractive. By contrast optimists, religious people and those with left-leaning political views tended to give themselves higher marks for physical appeal.

Paul Givan (DUP) is at it again [Belfast Telegraph]
Body receiving £25m from department is sidelined from curriculum report - CCEA is removed from role with extra money spent on consultants - The Education Minister has been accused of seeking a “pre-determined outcome” to the reform of Northern Ireland’s school curriculum after it emerged that a body funded by the department to the tune of £25m last year was “removed” from working groups.

CCEA has confirmed that curriculum expertise is “central to its statutory role” after the Belfast Telegraph reported that its officers had been removed from working groups tasked with reforming the curriculum here.

The Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) is Northern Ireland’s official awarding body, responsible for curriculum development, examinations and assessment across schools and colleges.

The matter came to light when academic William Kitchen told a BBC Radio Ulster Show that CCEA had a seat at the table and “they messed up” as “they didn’t read the script”.

Mr Kitchen claimed CCEA officials “weren’t even necessarily making valuable contributions to the actual process itself, so they were removed.”

Acting deputy secretary Suzanne Kingon was challenged when she appeared before Stormont’s education committee and said she could not speak for Dr Kitchen, but from the department’s perspective “a decision was taken that CCEA were not going to be on the subject working groups”.

CCEA accounts show it received more than £25.4m from the Department of Education to fulfil this role in 2024/25, and similar amounts in 2023/24 and 2022/23.

When asked about comments made at the committe e meeting, CCEA clearly stated: “Curriculum expertise is central to CCEA’S statutory role, and we remain committed to supporting the Department of Education and the wider education system in developing curriculum, examination and assessment arrangements that work well for pupils, teachers and schools in Northern Ireland.”

A spokesperson added: “CCEA is closely involved at a s…

Private Eye on Marina Hyde leaving the Guardian and the JK Rowling comment
Hyde out
MIXED emotions at the Guardian over the departure of Marina Hyde, the long-serving acerbic columnist who is off to pastures new (but remains coy so far about where they might be).
Hyde has enjoyed enormous success with the ever-expanding Rest Is Entertainment podcast she has hosted for Goalhanger with Richard Osman for the past three years, including considerable financial rewards from the hostage video-style adverts the pair voice during the show. She has previously complained to colleagues that her request to take a similar cut from a proposed in-house podcast series for the Guardian itself had been rebuffed by bosses, which led her to seek her fortune elsewhere.
With exquisite timing, Hyde handed in her notice just as the Guardian devoted the cover and five pages of its Saturday magazine to plugging her new book, a collection of columns published by the imprint the paper co-owns with Faber. By way of a hand grenade lobbed over her shoulder into the bear pit of pro- and anti-trans sensitivities that is the Guardian office, Hyde used her exit interview to respond to a reader question, “Who would you pick as prime minister?”: “JK Rowling.”

Six fire engines and eight firefighters were called to the semi-detached home in Bootle, Merseyside, at 3.38am yesterday. Crew members wearing breathing apparatus rushed inside to find four people in the upstairs bedroom ‘showing no signs of life’.

A man is also understood to have suffered serious burns after smashing the windows to try to rescue those inside.

A neighbour said she woke up to shouting but thought ‘someone was having an argument’. She added: ‘Then I came downstairs and saw all the fire engines.’

Chief fire officer Nick Searle said the ‘intense fire spread very rapidly’. He added that a police cordon will remain in place while emergency services investigate how the fire started.

DJ Westwood faces 2 more sex charges
Daily Mail23 Sep 2026
FORMER BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has been charged with two more sexual offences, police said yesterday.

The 68-year-old has been charged with indecently assaulting a teenage girl aged 16 to 17 in Hammersmith and Fulham, south-west London, in 1991.

He is also accused of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman in Wandsworth in 2004.

Westwood has already been charged with four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault – all of which he denies. It means he now faces a total of 17 charges against nine women.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy from the Metropolitan Police said the force was ‘committed’ to offering Westwood’s accusers ‘all available support’. Westwood will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court at a future date over the additional charges.

Row over Cambridge gender-neutral toilets
The Daily Telegraph22 Sep 2026By Tom Jeffreys
A CAMBRIDGE college has been accused of ignoring new guidance on single-sex spaces by giving toilets the gender-neutral labels of “cubicles” and “cubicles/urinals”.

The signage at King’s College follows a recommendation by a campus LGBT+ group. It has led to accusations that the college is ignoring new guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission which states that organisations must provide access to single-sex spaces on the basis of biological sex rather than gender identity.

The new guidance follows a Supreme Court ruling last year that transgender women are not legally women under equalities law.

A college alumna said the signs near the main college bar were putting women off using the lavatories with queuing for disabled facilities instead.

The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, accused the college of “caving into activists” and providing a “hostile environment for people who believe in biological sex.”

Boys and girls really are different as babies
Female infants show natural preference for faces, while males would rather gaze at objects
The Daily Telegraph22 Sep 2026By Sarah Knapton SCIENCE EDITOR
GIRLS and boys exhibit sex differences within a few hours of birth, a University of Cambridge study has found.

For decades, biologists and sociologists have noticed that boys and girls show different behaviours and preferences growing up, but have been unsure whether nature or nurture was responsible.

Cambridge scientists have shown that, on average, infant girls show a natural preference for looking at faces within a few hours of birth, while boys would rather gaze at objects.

Prof Sir Simon Baron-cohen, director of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge, who supervised the study, said: “This study addresses the age-old question of whether nature plays any role at all in shaping sex differences in the human mind and brain.

“The fact that we observe these differences within hours of birth, before extensive postnatal experience has occurred, suggests that prenatal factors play a role and that these prenatal factors – sex hormones and/or genes – go on to interact with postnatal experience. In other words, it’s nature and nurture, not nature or nurture.”

The alleged victim told her: “I don’t want to have sex with you” while Pc Anderson persisted, the jury heard.

Benefits claims for ADHD rise fastest in wealthy areas
The Daily Telegraph22 Sep 2026By Laura Donnelly HEALTH EDITOR
BENEFITS claims for teenage ADHD and autism have more than tripled since the pandemic, with the sharpest rise seen in the richest areas.

Researchers said higher rates of new ADHD diagnoses in wealthier areas may partly reflect affluent families making greater use of private routes to diagnosis.

They warned that soaring demand for diagnosis and treatment risked “crowding out” the most severe cases and the “unnecessary and possibly harmful pathologisation of a sizeable proportion of the population”. The Nuffield Trust report shows a quarter of 16- to 24-yearolds screened positive for ADHD symptoms in 2023-24, up from around 14 per cent in 2007. Researchers stressed that screening positive for symptoms does not amount to a clinical diagnosis.

Self-reported autism among 16- to 24-year-olds has also risen, from about 5 per cent in 2022 to 9 per cent in 2025.

The Government is reviewing ADHD, autism and mental health services amid controversy over rising diagnosis rates.

Seven in 10 GPS believe adult ADHD is over-diagnosed, while more than eight in 10 patients referred for assessments ultimately receive a diagnosis, doctors estimated.

However, Prof Peter Fonagy, who is leading the review, has insisted the wider rise in mental health problems among young people is real. He said his review would conclude that problems had increased since the 1990s, with one in four 16 to 24-year-olds now struggling.

Prof Fonagy rejected suggestions that a “snowflake generation” was behind the rise, saying it was now “harder to be young”. He said economic and employment uncertainty, combined with the pressures of social media, had created a “very toxic” environment for young people.

An attack on women
Daily Mail22 Sep 2026
THE Left’s obsessive focus on trans rights continues to be an insult to women everywhere.

The Greens and now the Lib Dems have set out how they aim to rewrite Britain’s equality laws.

Their goal is to up-end the Supreme Court’s ruling last year that the definition of a woman is based on biological sex.

Bumbling Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey even said he would support the motion at his party’s annual conference, and it was later backed by members.

The liberal Left’s effrontery on this issue stems from the same dictatorial approach they have repeatedly demonstrated towards Brexit.

‘This is not what we wanted, so it should be annulled,’ they assert, rather than accepting they have conclusively lost an argument.

Imagine the outcry if the political Right attempted to overturn the law in such a nakedly political manner.

But with these trans debates at the Lib Dem conference, and similar moves set to be discussed by the Greens next week, both parties have exposed the unpalatable truth.

They have shown their contempt for the rule of law is matched only by their derision for the rights of women.

Daily Mail22 Sep 2026by QUENTIN LETTS

ONE newspaper claimed there are 5,000 Lib Dems in Brighton for their conference. Are these hordes in the pubs? Playing fruit machines on the pier? Sunning themselves at the nudie beach? They certainly weren’t jamming the conference hall for day three of a ruthlessly bland affair. Attendance was on a par with a church fete.

Benefit claims for ADHD rising fastest among wealthy teenagers
Daily Mail22 Sep 2026By Zoe Hardy
YOUNG people in some of England’s most affluent areas are increasingly claiming disability benefits for ADHD and autism, analysis has found.

More than 205,400 young people aged 16 to 24 now receive a personal independence payment (PIP) for disabilities linked to the conditions.

And claims are rising fastest in wealthy neighbourhoods – reversing the pattern in which disability rates are linked to deprivation and poverty.

In relatively affluent Runnymede, Surrey, and Bracknell Forest, Berkshire, around one in 20 young people now receives PIP cash, which is intended to help with the extra costs of living with a disability.

The proportion was as few as one in 89 in 2019 – and is more than one-and-a-half times the rate in Blackpool, one of England’s most deprived areas, where 3.3 per cent of teenagers receive the benefit.

In Hart, Hampshire, and Wokingham, Berkshire – both prosperous areas with high employment rates – the proportion of young people receiving PIP money has risen more than four-fold since 2019.

Analysis by the Nuffield Trust found that, overall, the rise in PIP claims linked to ADHD and autism has been 28 per cent faster in England’s least deprived areas than in its poorest.

Been a while since Oliver Brown attacked some women in the sports pages of the Telegraph. Note how they are going after a Black athlete by saying she has 'allegedly not met gender verification at international level' which, as far as I'm aware, is just bullshit.
I’m disowned for saying women footballers must be born with ovaries
Elizabeth Eddy knew that tackling fraught topic risked backlash but did not expect ‘bullying’ from team-mates
Sport21 Sep 2026By Oliver Brown CHIEF SPORTS WRITER

On the attack: Sarah Gorden (left) and Angelina Anderson, of Angel City, at a media briefing where they denounced team-mate Eddy’s stance as ‘racist and transphobic’
Elizabeth Eddy had no reason to suppose that her team-mates were anything but her friends. After contributing to three title triumphs in the US National Women’s Soccer League, she felt so embraced by Los Angeles’ Angel City that her captain, Sarah Gorden, had even helped her fiancé plan their engagement.

With her career as a defender nearing its conclusion and her personal life blissfully content, she invited Gorden and Angelina Anderson, the goalkeeper, to her wedding. But the moment she spoke out about her league’s failure to protect the female category, a subject that almost everybody in women’s football would rather sweep aside, these same two players abandoned any pretence at loyalty, instead staging a press conference to denounce her as “racist” and “transphobic”.

“It was terrible,” Eddy says, still scalded by the experience almost a year later. With her sunny southern Californian temperament and an inquiring mind that propelled her to obtain a master’s degree alongside her football career, she understood she was tackling a fraught topic but had no warning about the ferocity of the backlash. “I knew it would be bad, I just didn’t realise it would be this type of bad, with character defamation and public shaming. I thought, ‘Maybe some people will hate me.’ But to slander my name and lie about me? I was shocked by the complete disowning.”

This is a brave and important interview for Eddy to be giving. “I’m the only one in women’s soccer speaking about this,” she acknowledges. “Part of the beauty of sport is that you’re supposed to bring people together with different vi…

ADHD in adults is over-diagnosed say doctors
The Daily Telegraph21 Sep 2026By Laura Donnelly HEALTH EDITOR
‘I don’t think I have ever seen a private provider not give a positive diagnosis’

SEVEN in 10 GPS believe adult ADHD is over-diagnosed, with some saying private providers never reject a diagnosis.

Long NHS waits have driven patients towards private ADHD assessments, with clinics receiving fees from both people paying for themselves and Nhsfunded referrals.

Some patients pay more than £1,000 for an assessment, while others access private providers at the taxpayers’ expense through England’s Right to Choose scheme, which gives NHS patients the right to pick which provider delivers their treatment.

Family doctors estimated that more than eight in 10 patients referred for specialist assessments ultimately received an ADHD diagnosis.

One GP reported only one negative assessment among more than 1,000 referrals, while another could not recall a private provider ever declining to diagnose the condition. Doctors raised concerns about “superficial” assessments and warned that trauma and other mental health problems could be overlooked.

The findings were published before a government-commissioned review into the rising demand for ADHD, autism and mental health services.

Prof Peter Fonagy, the clinical psychologist leading the review, is expected to recommend providing more support based on people’s needs, without requiring a formal diagnosis.

Boast of pensioner who sprayed ant killer into the eyes of 6ft 1in male neighbour in row over drive
Daily Mail21 Sep 2026By Jack Hardy

A PENSIONER who sprayed ant poison into her terminally ill neighbour’s eyes told him nobody would believe she was the culprit because she was an elderly woman.

Sally Beaney, 75, ‘revelled in making other people’s lives very difficult’ and robbed her victim Matthew Perry of precious years because of a parking dispute, he told a court.

Her attack left her neighbour, who has late stage cancer, with swelling on his eye from chemical burns and a corneal injury.

Mr Perry had moved next door to Beaney with his wife Lucy and their two children about 15 years ago. Gaylene Coles, prosecuting, said: ‘[They] are neighbours who share a driveway. He believed he could park by the property.

‘In June 2025, there was an issue between them with a lawnmower. After that, notices began to appear about parking in the wrong place.’ Following this, Mr Perry parked in the road instead but then Beaney began to leave objects out to prevent him from doing so. She also filmed his family and shouted at them as they came and went, the court heard. Her antisocial behaviour escalated on October 13 last year when, out of the blue, she sprayed ant killer in Mr Perry’s eyes as he left home in Southampton.
