Finishing the stack of grading then the stack of admin, so I can work on the papers I'm actually excited to write on, and have time to drive to the bookstore to pick up the stack of new SFF+horror waiting there. Fall term motivation. Sunset over the long weekend
The sun setting through a tall fir tree, gazing across a wooden acupture park towards the Vancouver lower mainland. The north shote mountains are bathed in golden light. A glow in the air in the distance surrounds the barely visible buildings of downtown.

Fall has arrived on Burnaby Mountain, which means brutalist concrete enveloped in cloud. Pro sem today was Carnap ESO and a chunk of the new book by Cartwright, Munro, and Pemberton. We had a good discussion and also had to turn the lights on because of the gloom. #philsci #sfu
A lone person wearing a red backpack walks towards the edge of the frame in a complicated brutalist concrete set of plateaud stairs with several visible floors. There are a lot of stark horizontal and vertical lines of concrete, with a diagonal of a stairwell above the stairs. Through the far side windows is only the blankness of fog.

Eid mubarak! Los Angeles palm trees and moon.
Two palm tree tops are silhouetted against a dark blue sky with a small crescent moon to the right of them. The glowing part of the crescent is the bottom edge of the moon, and the rest of the moon is still slightly visible as lighter than the sky around it.

Eldest child drew me this amazing snail blorbo on my notebook cover, had to share
On a rough thick brown paper notebook cover is a line art drawing of a snail. It is sluglike with a lovely curved shell, and lots of great texture details in fine point ink. It has two glorpy eyes on stalks and two mouth tentacles for waving slowly and sighing. It is a handsome boi.

Eldest child made this arcane lore christmas meme. Happy christmas eve!
A meme format with new details filled in. On the left, it reads, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Then a red arrow with text above and below. Above text reads, Kissing a guy's wife is fine if you kiss him too. Below text reads, Everyone is imperfect, but being honest and forthcoming about our mistakes is the path to redemption.

The crows in Bloomington do the same evening commute through the sky together as they do in Burnaby. A river of flying crows at sunset. View from @jordicat.bsky.social 's office: there were dozens to hundreds per tree.
sunset colours with silhouettes of about twenty crows sitting at the very top of a tree or flying just above the trees

Heading into the long weekend with some atmosphere. Philosophers: do have a strong, or mild, preference for reading papers when its one paper with that hang together at 14k-ish words, or two shorter papers that each have less in terms of a point but also are only 7-8k each? #philsci #philsky
Dark looming clouds that are slightly out of focus are visible through a window with streaks of rain on it. The streaks are in crisp focus and the little drops are silvery and bright.

Happy Mid-autumn harvest festival weekend! I made fusion mooncakes, cookie outside with a paste of dates and four kinds of nuts inside. Metro Vancouver style energy snacks, because I absolutely have to finish this draft today.
View looking down into a tin lined with paper, holding four stacks of mooncakes. Two stacks are round with a flower pattern on top, two stacks have square cookies with a different flower pattern on top. This picture was taken earlier today and already those stacks are half gone.

A lovely moment shared with Ebeneezer Murderbeak on the walk in. They played with that mallard decoy! Pushing it around like a toy duck. And they coo'd at me! You can hear them make little cozy sounds if you listen closely. Definitely improved my day to be counted as birdfriend. #sfu #heron

Ebeneezer Murderbeak is back! Just in time for the start of Fall term. Here he is atop the AQ, admiring some brutalist Arthur Erickson architecture in the morning light filtered through wildfire smoke. Waiting for his moment to lecture some students and snack on some koi. #sfu
A grey heron sits atop a concrete brutalist building. The building has regular lines but they are somewhat distorted because of the angle at which the photo was taken. The light is weirdly sepia coloured, a result of all the smoke.

Oh summer garden drama. Stolen rhubarb-weird? but whatever. Then stolen tomatoes, which is pure sacrilege. After 8 years w/out a single apple, our little tree did so well! Kids were proud. Till a bear sat on it and squashed the whole thing, trellis and tree. Still a great garden year, though
The wreckage of an espaliered apple tree trellis, broken into pieces and pushed over, with trees branches through it. There are a lot of apples on the tree, still rather small and green but also delicious.

Bad news is I found a wasp nest. Good news is somehow it looks very cozy and homey? I kinda want to crawl inside with some tea and a blanket and book and take a nap?
A paper wasp nest hangs nestled in the fronds of a cedar tree, viewed from the same height as the nest. The surface of the nest is whorled and woody, like an old but well maintained wooden cabin on a stormy pacific beach.

Went for a long lovely walk this evening. He used to be so much smaller on evening walks on this trail! But also the trees used to be shorter, so. It gives pics of him here this kind of out-of-time character
A trail into a forest. The sides are dense with bushes, and small logs lay across the entry of the trail, which help you hop over the muddy bits during rainy season. Trees rise with eerie thin light grey trunks, and leaves only up at the top canopy layer. The back of a child is visible, walking up the inclined trail into the forest. The pic is all in black and white.

Saw an exhibit of work by Håkon Gullvåg at this sprawling hilltop fortress in Halden, in one of the old storehouses. Teens were enthralled and terrified, they refused to be alone with it. This trio was my favourite, reminded me of The Twisted Ones by @tkingfisher.com
A painting about two meters by two meters, under visible timbered ceiling against white walls with two deep window alcoves, a meter or so deep. The painting has a black background and is of a game animal, maybe a reindeer? But kind of a skeleton of the animal, its face is like a skull. There are brishes of browns and dark oranges that dont seem directly representational but are somehow very horror esque.Same as other painting, a different animal, maybe a kind of deer, where the animal is part skeleton, or flesh is melting, or something. Hard to deacribe but the effect is unsettling.Another unsettling animal thst is mostly skeleton with flesh melting off.

One nice small moment a day for #pride month. Today, listening to these two read out loud in the hammock in the evening, I learned what chelicerae are
A dad and tween kid snuggled in a hammock reading a book, viewed so their heads but not faces are visible. The book could be read if zoomed in. It is about spiders. The hammock is on a small patio with greenery surrounding it. The summer evening sun washes it all in a gentle warm light.

Pride month pic-a-day! Youngest told us last night that BTW he needs 10 crème brûlées for "french cafe" language class tomorrow. We improvised - 1 big dish, and 10 patches of burnt sugar that will surely be soggy by the time they eat it, but also serve as scooping guides for the kids. Phew! #pride
An oval clear glass baking dish with yellow creme brulee in it. There are ten little patches of dark brown burnt sugar on top, with spaces in between, because trying to spoon through a full top of burnt sugar that spent the day in a fridge getting soggy would be a total mess for kids to try and serve.

A pic each day of Pride month to celebrate small lovely moments. On a walk yesterday evening with friends to the sunset viewing hill at Burnaby Mountain park. Clear view all the way out to Vancouver island. #pride #SFU
A panoramc view of Metro Vancouver, looking westward. Burrard inlet and the north shore mountains are visible. There are streets and neighborhoods laid out in a grid over big hills, and a cluster of high rises in the middle distance. The sky is orange with sunset light and a high layer of grey-blue clouds above.

Happy Pride month! Pic of a small lovely moment each day. Here is a jewel-encrusted bee doing a barre routine in a gorgeously blue iris near sunset #pride

Terry Fox sporting a new spring hat #SFU
A statue of Terry Fox, viewed from behind, on which sits perched a rather chipper crow. It is glossy black in the morning sun, framed against the blue sky and some of those weird bushes Arthur Erickson put around the Academic Quadrangle at Simon Fraser University campus. This is no quothing raven, it is definitely a spring chicken I mean crow.

Still life in printing room. After a lot of discussion, we are still going to the P-APA. 2 (of 4) travellers in our party may have trouble at the border, for different reasons. Main deciding factor is that we cross at the airport, on Canadian soil. This is not professionally sustainable #philsky

I just got such a lovely present from a student: my own embosser! I have a lending library of philosophical scifi/fantasy, usually just write my name inside the cover. Now I can emboss IT IS VERY SATISFYING And has a theme in the middle from a book we read in class, A Psalm for the Wildbuilt.
A copper embosser, the handheld variety, rests on a blank sheet of paper. Next to it is a gold seal that it had embossed. The outer words read, From the Library of Holly Andersen. Inside the circle of these words, there is a stack of books with a mice steaming cup of tea.

I have seen a lot of deer around here and none of them are sporting a rack like that. I think the deer paid off the designer. And maybe to have the crows left off, too. Doing the crows wrong to put a pigeon there. The seagulls would also like a word. #SFU
A sign in a wide covered plaza. It is red, with a large Caution at the top. Then, it reads, Do Not Feed the Wildlife. There are four animal silhouettes. One is a bear, which okay, there are a couple bears who hang around, but mostly only come on campus for leftover Tim Hortons. There is a deer with a huge set of antlers, four points to a side. The most ever spotted by this author was two points a side. A racoon silhouette, which is also weirdly chubby but that is pretty accurate because the raccoons will mug you for your food. They will chase you off and be terrifying and somehow cute at the same time. The fourth and final silhouette is a pigeon. There are oretty much no pigeons on campus. But the crows rule this mountain top. They remember your face. Feed them small snacks to build your crow army.

If the sign were really accurate, it would also have a seagull and a heron.

It is weird and hard to focus on writing deadlines instead of the rapid escalation of authoritarianism next door. But one thing I can do is make sure SFU remains functional with institutional processes in place. So: writing deadlines. Teaching. Etc. Argh. New boots. Alt text is my new photo fave.
View of the phototakers feet in new black suede boots with plaid red and black laces. The boots go above the ankle and are welted with white thread. The feet are crossed at the ankle on a wooden desk. Out of focus bookshelves in the background suggest an academic office. They look like the kind of boots that would be good for a snowy walk across campus, or for kicking ass and taking names. The red and black laces bring a very "Canada does not want your bullshit" vibe.
