OTD: COURAGE LEAGUE 1988 Tigers 15 (Hare 5p) Orrell 27 Welford Road, 8 October If Tigers had a bogey side in the 1980s - aside from everyone’s bogey side Bath - it was Orrell. It would take four attempts in the league before they finally beat them.

OTD: 1982 Midlands 25 Fiji 16 Welford Road, 6 October Local rivals regularly combined in October and November against that season’s tourists. In the early 1980s Welford Road saw a hat-trick of wins for the Midlands over Australia, Fiji and New Zealand.

TIGERS v NEWCASTLE Leicester first played Newcastle (then known as Gosforth) at Welford Road in September 1969, a 48-6 home victory. Gosforth matches were fairly irregular on the fixture list until competitive rugby brought them together.

THE NEW STAND 106 years old today, ‘The New Stand’ was officially opened on 2 October 1920 by RFU President Ernest Prescott ahead of the Leicester versus Headingley fixture. It cost £21,000.
