A useful heads-up for artists selling physical work into the EU. Although this infographic is written for Ireland, it explains the new €3 customs charge on low-value purchases from outside the EU. The charge can apply to each different type of item in a parcel, so review your shipping and pricing.

Although this infographic is aimed at Ireland, it’s one of the clearest explanations we’ve seen of how the new charges work. Worth a look if you sell into the EU and are still trying to get your head around what’s changing.

Infographic titled “New customs rules coming to Ireland, 1 July 2026.” It explains that many online purchases worth €150 or less, sent to Ireland from outside the EU, will face a new €3 customs duty from 1 July 2026.

The charge applies to goods from countries including Great Britain, China, the United States and other non-EU countries. It is charged per distinct type of item in a parcel, not simply once per parcel. One notebook would attract a €3 charge. A notebook, pen and keyring would count as three item types and attract €9. Two identical pens would count as one item type and attract €3. A silk blouse and cotton T-shirt would count as two item types and attract €6.

VAT is then calculated on the value of the goods, shipping costs and the customs duty.

The infographic says UK purchases may become more expensive, depending on whether the retailer includes the charge at checkout or it is collected separately during import.

It says the EU is introducing the change to reduce undervaluation and customs fraud, create a fairer market for EU retailers and improve controls on the large volume of low-value imports from overseas marketplaces.

A final example shows a €5 phone case, €4 charging cable and €3 screen protector bought from a Chinese marketplace. As three distinct item types, they would attract €9 customs duty, plus VAT.

I've always had a soft spot for classic film noir, and this new alternative poster by Micah Champion for the 1950 noir classic D.O.A. is no exception. It's now available as a print from the Hireillo Press Shop. press.hireillo.com/products/d-o-a
