This one hurts.Helen’s reporting on the Covid pandemic was epic. Her early reporting allowed me and my family to be prepared long before lockdowns started and kept me grounded and sane during the worst of it. A legend in health and disease reporting that will be truly missed.

In the last couple of years, we've seen multiple critical collections (museums, herbaria) close. The IUCN--the global authority on the status of biodiversity--recently published on how important these kinds of facilities are in conservation. Every day, the dead are working to protect the living.

Teaching about Allee effects today which means that I get to show this video. It’s a hammerhead shark, playing a piano in an Elton John costume, singing about abalone. Laugh so hard I cry every dang time…. youtu.be/MLAmdHTnr1g

Thanks. I’m glad the world is trying to become less tolerant of it. But many of my female students are still not comfortable confronting it, so I make sure warn my students that behavior isn’t tolerated, to tell me, and I can and will handle it.

Silent spring is a classic. Cant go wrong there. There are a couple of good chapters in Braiding Sweetgrass dealing with ecotox but it’s a long book so I don’t think I would go whole book on that. Maybe something like Living Downstream?

Haven’t taught that one yet, but blending with a few chapters from a toxicology book might help. That’s usually more on the human side. I’ve found whatever perspectives I can provide on that side of the concept help them. I wonder if there are any popular science nonfiction books out there…….

I use a standard ecology textbook (bowman and hacker) for concepts but have added examples relevant to students geared towards pre health. in pop growth we do disease modeling with r0 and talk through r0 and herd immunity relationships. I have an activity on zoonotic diseases and h5n1. Etc.

In my behavioral ecology lecture, we talk about prey strategies to avoid being dinner. This picture is on the slide under “avoid being dinner” and in a class poll only a third of my students gets this pop culture reference. I’m old. Sigh.

Anything from K Paul’s (Paul Prudhomme’s) in NOLA. Shut down in 2020. So many delicious dishes but the steak and debris sauce was amazing. The only place I’ve ever wanted to literally lick my plate in a restaraunt

Back to the Bayou for more SAV suction sampling. I’m officially a Louisiana scientist now because I can now put it a paper “ only 2 of 3 replicates were collected at this site due to a very curious gator who would not leave”

30 or so live marine inverts and algae. 9000 steps. And one visit from Dr. Henderson, our university President. A successful invert lab for my marine biology class.

I had three students present at the Benthic ecology meeting. 2 undergrads, 1 grad student giving their first oral presentations. To say they were nervous would be an understatement, but they all did amazing!

Very effective illustration of what has happened to Florida's coral reefs in response to anthropogenic climate and environment change. The loss of this important ecosystem is all but complete - attempts to rescue it discussed here: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... 🪸🧪🌊
A schematic image showing Recent changes in reef zonation of western Atlantic coral reefs, brought about by lack of recruitment of elkhorn, staghorn, and massive boulder corals. Without these key reef builders, the reefs have already measurably eroded. Image credit: Rashpal Dhilon. Adapted from ref. 6, which is licensed under CC BY 4.0. The panel on the left labeled Late Pleistocene to ~1978 shows a vibrant ecosystem, the middle panel (the 1980s) is depleted but still many corals remain (though some key species are lost). The panel on the right (2020s) is like a moonscape with a few hardy species left.

4 to 5 inches of pretty much solid sleet here in central North Louisiana. Glad we didn’t get as much freezing rain which would have made it awful. Currently wishing the road conditions were better so we could effectively help our eastern towns as 20 minutes down the road they weren’t as lucky…..

Finally get a floating plant salinity stress test study going with my undergrads. Kiddie pools all set up outside with different salinity treatments. And now we are forecasted to potentially get over 4 inches of rain 🤦‍♀️ Yay for early morning runs to the store to grab plastic tarps! 😬

A day in the marsh collecting periwinkle snails. My students were blessed by the marsh gods (I.e sunk in the mud) many times. I got to jump in to the bay to remove a derelict crab trap that wrapped around our boat prop. Thank the marsh gods I left wire snips in my dry bag from our last trip!

One of my students told me this week that every time she hears all this autism, vaccine, and Tylenol stuff in the news, she hears my voice in her head saying “correlation is not causation” and “ shark attacks are correlated with ice cream sales” Someone listened and learned. It is possible!
