There are 323,000 households in arrears on their electricity bills in Ireland today. People are afraid to heat their homes. At the same time, we have energy companies recording eye-watering profits. Government should prioritise addressing people's fears over the profits of energy companies.

We are facing a public sector worker strike on 14th of October. Many of those striking are on the frontline of public service and do vital work for all of us every day. We, in the Social Democrats, support this strike which is happening due to Government's failure to engage in meaningful talks.

Sport is a universal language built on respect. We cannot respect a genocidal regime. We cannot respect violent settlements. We cannot respect racism. We missed an opportunity to show the world that Ireland does not sportswash. That Ireland stands in solidarity with Palestinian people.

There are no plans for an EU-wide windfall tax on energy companies. So why are govt telling us they're working constructively towards one? Today, we put forward plans for a national windfall tax – but the govt won't support it. It's nothing short of baffling.

The govt say that they will listen to constructive proposals from the opposition benches. Yet when we proposed to tax excess energy profits, they responded with a counter-motion that wiped out the text of our motion entirely. So why tell us – over and over again – that they're willing to engage?

Today, we launched our Alternative Budget for 2027. It's not just a budget though – it's a plan to make life more affordable for people. And not just right now, but permanently.

Four days since the CHI scoping inquiry was published, serious concerns of families have not been addressed. Worse. They've been ignored. Children, with scoliosis and spinal bifida, were repeatedly failed by both the health service and Gov. Critical surgeries were delayed, sometimes for years.

Is it any wonder the country is going around in circles with housing policy? HOUSING SHOULD BE A HUMAN RIGHT. It is time to have a referendum to put the right to housing in our Constitution but what will Government have to say?

Tomorrow, the 15th March for Choice will take place in Dublin. That’s 15 years of calling for an end to this paternalistic view of reproductive rights. 8 years after Repeal, there are still too many barriers to abortion access. The Dáil voted to remove the three day wait, when will it happen?

Turning off social media algorithms for users by default is a key way we can tackle the spread of harmful content. It was originally in Coimisiún na Meáin's online safety code, and it makes perfect sense. The government are once again dragging their heels. We need to see action.

Latest figures show there were 17,885 people living in homeless emergency accommodation at the end of August, including 5,830 children. Housing should be a human right, and Rory Hearne will be bringing forward a Right to Housing Bill before the Dáil next Thursday.

The ongoing situation around Gazan student visas is an embarrassment. One government department has offered these students scholarships, but another won't approve their visas. The Minister for Justice and the Minister for Foreign Affairs must communicate, and resolve this fiasco.

The Government made a lot of promises in the general election of 2024; promises of investment in childcare, healthcare, education, the list goes on. Instead of giving people minuscule tax breaks, we should be seeing more investment in public infrastructure while we have the surplus.

As opposition, our job is to question govt policy. But people often ask us what we would do differently. For our education spokesperson @jencummins.bsky.social it starts with ensuring that no child is an outsider at school. And something else about homework... but we can't make promises on that.

The truth of what happened to children at Bessborough lies on its grounds. Forced family separation and human trafficking are part of the shameful history of this Mother and Baby Home and many others. So why is the govt standing by as the site and its history is built over? Shame on them.

All over the country, solicitors are removing themselves from the free legal aid scheme. It's causing thousands of cases to be adjourned, and is leaving victims and their families in limbo. Why is the govt so intent on dismantling this scheme? And why are they doubling down on causing chaos?

Buying a home in Dublin feels out of reach. Prices are far beyond incomes, and affordable housing plans won’t meet demand. Without real action, people are being locked out of home ownership.

The way vapes are advertised and marketed to young people is genius – but it is insidious. Exciting flavours and bright colours mask adverse health outcomes from using these products. Legislation to ban flavoured vapes couldn't have come any sooner.

Teachers are still waiting on pay they were due months ago. At the INTO conference, delegates spoke clearly about pay delays, working conditions and the urgent need for proper supports in education. In the middle of a cost of living crisis, this simply isn’t good enough.

The four brave survivors of institutional schools who undertook a hunger strike to raise awareness for the abuse they suffered and demand the services they deserve, should never have had to go to those lengths. But they did – now the state must show up for them, and deliver on its promises.
