Autumn has arrived in Highgate Wood, and among the fungi you may spot this season are Ganoderma applanatum, Amanita muscaria and Mycena pura 🍄🍂 Please leave fungi where you find them. They help trees thrive, recycle nutrients and support woodland life. Take photos, leave nature📸

Today marks the September Equinox! It's the point where day and night are equal in length, and autumn begins🍂 As we leave summer behind and move into cooler months, please remember to not pick fungi as it emerges - it is an essential part of the ecosystem 🍄

What have our arborists been up to 🤔 To help keep visitors safe along the nearby footpath, our team is reducing this oak while retaining as much deadwood as possible. This is because dead trees are an incredible hotspot for wildlife, providing valuable habitats for many species.

...or undergoing 'inosculation', as scientists call it 🤝🌳 Inosculation is a natural process where two trees weave and intertwine together. This connection can provide added structural support and may even allow the trees to share water and nutrients through their joined tissues.

A recent survey counted over 46 species of moths in Highgate Wood! This was done using a moth trap, that allows conservationists to survey species without harming them. A range of species shows good biodiversity - something that is essential to a functioning ecosystem.

Summer is an excellent time to see bats across London 🦇 As the evenings get warmer, species such as Common Pipistrelle, Natterer's and Daubenton's bats become more active. Keep an eye out near parks, rivers, and gardens just after sunset, and watch for quick, darting movements against the sky.

In our wildflower meadow, you may spot some of these little mounds... they're ant hills! If you look closely, you'll find that these ant hills have holes and divots in them. These are made by green woodpeckers, which land and peck into the hills to feed on the ants! 🐜🌻

Swipe to see why we close in high winds ➡️ Earlier this week, we closed due to strong winds and these are just some of the photos taken the day after, of two hornbeams and an oak tree that had unfortunately come down. Hopefully with summer around the corner, we'll be in for brighter, calmer days ☀️

Cauliflower slime mould! An essential part of the forest and nutrient recycling, when spring arrives, they puff up into these marshmallow-y forms on old logs. Then their skin cracks open to reveal a brown spore-filled pulp! Amazing? Or not your cup of tea? Let us know what you think of them!
