Last weekend we opened the doors of UOM’s Pelletron laboratory for the UOM open day. Propsective students learned the physics of Van de Graaff generators with a tabletop demo, saw its much bigger particle accelerating sister in a tour of the Pelletron lab. A big shout out to our volunteers.

Last weekend we celebrated 80 years of the ANU at the ANU Community Day. Armed with a tabletop Van de Graaff, four of our physicists demonstrated that the same physics that makes pie tins levitate also accelerates particles up to 1/3 the speed of light. A big thanks to our volunteers.

When radioactive atoms inside minerals decay, they fire out high energy particles that leave trails of destruction.
