France has finalized a €1.3 billion agreement for two Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning and control aircraft, confirming a major shift in how it plans to watch its airspace in the decades ahead. The contract covers two aircraft with deliveries scheduled for 2029 and 2032, plus an option for two more. Built on Bombardier’s Global 6000 platform, GlobalEye is far smaller and lighter than France’s aging Boeing E-3 Sentry fleet, which has been in service since the early 1990s.Despite its size, GlobalEye carries Saab’s Erieye Extended Range radar, capable of detecting air and maritime targets hundreds of miles away. France is betting that modern sensors and data fusion can deliver the same mission impact with far lower operating costs. The move places France alongside the UAE as an operator and signals a wider European trend toward leaner, more flexible airborne surveillance aircraft.
