Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Calm morning after a night of thunder and rain. In a place where thunderstorms are rare last night’s was a doozy that went on for several hours. These pictures are of the middle arm of the Fraser River showing a pretty boat, the UBC rowing club and the Dinsmore Bridge . 040
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 21/05/2026Manila traffic. Driving here is an art. Chaos but it works. 140

Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 10/02/2026It’s a grey, grim day on the Burrard Inlet, but the North Van sulphur heap will have none of it. 010
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 19/10/2025Ginkgos yellowing and Yamato. It’s a warm fall day in Chiba. 000
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 26/09/2025My love is far away with a typhoon a day away as I’m scrubbing a pot so when she’s back she won’t see I burned the stew because I was online worrying over the path of the storm. 010
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 06/09/2025The moon is the colour of a traffic cone. Everything is fine. 011

Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 13/08/2025Last night’s sunset through smoke from a wildfire on Vancouver Island. 100
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 31/07/2025No tsunami, thank you. (Though here on the sheltered side of Vancouver Island, a big wave would be unlikely as I understand it.) 010
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 29/06/2025The inevitable result of taking a picture of a distant mountain from a moving vehicle. 121
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 25/05/2025Pilings. A cannery was here? View from Brunswick Pt., Delta BC looking north across Canoe Pass (Fraser River) to Westham Island. 150
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 19/05/2025Shrubs, trees, gardens here are as lush as I’ve ever seen. Trees from the East Asian collection at Garden City Park: Davidia (dove tree, handkerchief tree), dawn redwood, Chinese tulip tree. And the rhodos are bonkers. 210

Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 25/04/2025Blue sky, blue sea, blue islands. Approaching YVR over Bellingham Bay, admiring the San Juan Islands, as pretty an archipelago as you’ll find anywhere. 021
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 02/04/2025Spring wants to poke you in the eye with its fat furry fingers. This is what causes allergies. 020
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 27/03/2025Thunder was predicted but didn't materialize last night. Not predicted was a Short-eared Owl in a rhododendron in our back yard. But there it was at dinner time, an open-country bird checking out the burbs. 030
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 20/03/2025This is a mole chasing me up a hill. Joke’s on him I’m heading for a cliff. 011
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 27/02/2025Every legit grocery store here has a pair of parking lot ravens. The corvid seal of approval. 131
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 06/02/2025Mid-winter photo tip: counteract the near-monochrome grimness of the season with the inclusion of a person* in a red coat. *and/or dog 021
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 30/01/2025Yesterday was the last of a spate of unJanuary-like blue sky days. 121
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 19/01/2025Hair ice! This amazing stuff forms on rotting wood here, but not very often. There has to be the right amount of damp (we’ve had a lot), the right amount of cold (around freezing—the best we’ve done so far this winter) and a latitude between 45 and 55 N (not sure why, but we’re in the sweet spot). 111
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 17/01/2025As I walked along a path in the park a man on an e-bike rode slowly towards me. The bike was making a weird, whiny noise. He passed me, his face bored. The whiny noise was not the bike. He was being followed by a drone the size of an ashtray, about three feet behind him and four feet up. What? Why? 110
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 10/01/2025Today is blustery but yesterday was calm with interesting skies. 120
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 09/01/2025In a botany course I wrote a paper on the dawn redwood, a “living fossil” from central China. They’re conifers that shed their needles. Always fun to find one in a park or schoolyard. This eye-catcher is in Minoru Park. 030
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 08/01/20252024 was the wettest year so far this century here, and it’s still raining and everything and everyone looks like this (either a tree or a large man standing in front of me at the bank). 111
Hugh Griffith @hgriffith.bsky.social · 22/12/2024Back from sunny LA to the Pacific North-wet. The only touristy thing we did there was visit La Brea. I remember as a kid my dad telling me about tar pits in the middle of a city filled with mammoth (etc.) bones. How AMAZING. I had to see it, despite an Uber driver who claimed "IT'S REALLY BORING!" 131
