The PS1 had no depth buffer: its games sorted each frame's triangles far to near and painted them in that order. So the gun in your hands could go in the nearest slot, drawn last, over everything. 14 guns in first-person arms: heyheythere.itch.io/psx-firearms #ScreenshotSaturday #gamedev #PSX

Why are PS1 textures so often 64x64? At 16 colours that's 4 bits a pixel: 64 x 64 x 4 bits = 2,048 bytes, exactly the PS1 GPU's texture cache. And all of it shared 1 MB of VRAM with the screen itself. 138 textures made that way: heyheythere.itch.io/psx-textures #GameDev #PSX #PS1 #RetroGaming
A red brick texture tiled three by three with one 64 by 64 pixel tile outlined, beside its 16-colour palette and the sum: 64 x 64 x 4 bits = 2,048 bytes, the PS1 GPU texture cache. 1 MB of VRAM, shared with the screen itself.A PS1-style hospital room built from the textures: stained teal tiles and peeling plaster, barred windows, a steel door under an exit sign, and a pool of blood on a checkered floor.
