Though its not relevant here theres a conversation to be had about how bad people will accuse people they don't like of heinous actions to use "believe victims" to form a lynch mob and how the only way to change society is through compassion but thats for a different time and issue and im tired

Anyways my conclusion is this: your response can be your own and your emotions and shock and outrage are justified but only time will tell how this should pan out and telling anyone a definitive how to feel about this is hasty at best. If she speaks out follow her wishes. If not just live with it.

This woman being raped 10 years ago was brought to light by a third party who seemingly did it without her permission or approval and made it so that any further action beyond this could only be justified if she speaks up, which tbh should really piss all of us off! Her voice remains out of this!

None of us can act as some arbiter of justice because none of us are working with a full deck. It'd be different if the victim exposed this, that would at least clearly tell that she wanted something done about it, but even though thats been the case in most of these cases that wasn't the case here

And thats why its very nuanced. I feel like its not avoidance to say "I truly don't know enough to have a say in the matter" because we really don't! I don't know if this is a done deal, if its a lingering scar, if we've been fooled for years, if hes genuinely changed and made amends, or anything.

So we now have the other extreme, "all is forgiven, that minor pushback you got years ago is enough" but obviously that isn't right either. Its a severe crime, one that we went years without knowing, and while i don't expect it to be part of his introduction id much prefer more honesty

That belief is built on an "execution without trial" mindset. So while i may not have seen this come up much from this specific incident and don't think he'll actually be hurt I feel its reasonable to fear this being a normalized response by now

I saw at least one thing say that nobody is actually calling for extreme retribution for this but that is just not true. More and more over the years ive seen the sentiment "the power of love won't work, instead we use the power of extreme violence" and while i doubt literal violence will come-

If we simplify it to "public figure did a bad thing in the past, is now canceled forever" then that forgoes any idea that rehabilitation is possible. I've seen people be harassed for literal years over less extreme infractions, long after the issue was dealt with. So obviously we cannot do this.

I am a believer in "forgive but don't forget". I don't expect everyone or even most people to do that. I don't know if he learned or is just manipulating us all or if its just platitudes but neither does anyone else. Hence why I say its a nuanced conversation to have.

Truthfully I cant say what should be done. There is no clear answer since its an act that can't be undone. Does he go to jail now, 10 years after the fact? Does he need to make restitution? I feel like thats for the victim to decide but again that would require an act of cruelty to identify her.

While I could say "I hope she's handling this well" thats just platitudes. She won't see this in all likelihood. For all I know she severed this from her memory years ago, as unlikely as that is, and honestly it would be downright cruel to force her to come forth so we don't have doubts about this.

Theres a real instinct when we learn about a beloved person doing something bad to accept nothing short of them committing suicide and in my experience that does nothing but push people to extremist groups and cause an othering so extreme the public can convince themselves this person isn't human.

Like the punishment at the time was very minor but does that mean it now falls on the public to carry out a sentence? It'd be one thing if they didn't learn from it and is still awful but if the person had already been rehabilitated does this genuinely help anyone? I dont believe it really does.
