Thankfully this trend has not reached British primetime TV yet 😜 Seriously though, one of the great things in British culture is that people on TV / films look like real people - comedians, news anchors, movie stars.

Yes, I agree, it was confusing I believe what he meant was: In this hypothetical reality, I wouldn't need any other games since I can create my own, so I'm just going to sell all of them. Basically, "I bought a mirror so now I can sell my TV" 😂

Not really, the researchers purposely constructed self-centric pain statements and used them to define a "pain axis" vector. They could just as easily construct a different set of statements that would include empathy.

Yanir Kleiman @hexygen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I also do not think it is surprising that such tokens correlate to refusals and task avoidance. It's akin to testing the hypothesis that being a dick on reddit makes people less likely to help you. I'm not saying there is no merit to the research, just that we shouldn't be surprised by the results.
000
Yanir Kleiman @hexygen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
If we would curate a list of tokens that represent painful feelings and directly boost their probability, it would not be surprising that the model outputs texts that reflect pain. In fact, a similar way to make sure models return valid code / json is to limit their output tokens to valid tokens.
100
Yanir Kleiman @hexygen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Effectively, they are changing the probability distribution of output tokens, in a very convoluted way, which eventually amounts to giving higher probability to negative tokens that appear in pain response in the training data.
100
Yanir Kleiman @hexygen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
That is to say, it is not an emergent property of the network or the specific training, but rather of the intrinsic relations between words and phrases. The fact that we can extract a "pain axis" just means the model is doing what it should!
100
Yanir Kleiman @hexygen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Overall, this is an interesting exercise in semantics but I think it tells us more about language than about language models. I believe they could have done something similar with CLIP embedding / token space instead of layer activations (e.g. add the "pain" embedding as conditional tokens).
110
Yanir Kleiman @hexygen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
That "pain axis" is whatever the researchers decided it is. It is extracted from a set of 100 "pain" prompts and 100 "neutral" prompts, all containing "me", "my" or "I" and ending with "I feel:". Obviously, a different set e.g. "the little boy cried. I feel:" would produce a more emphatic vector.

Also note that one of the "rounded pills" is "Green" and the other is apparently not? They are, of course, the same design element. (Putting aside the fact that using a repeated design pattern on a web page is nowhere near an indication that the content is generated by AI!)

Yanir Kleiman @hexygen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
For example, what would be the canned response for "Small rounded capsule labels are used repeatedly for venue/affiliation tags (SIGGRAPH 2025, META AI 2024) — a mild instance of the pill-tag pattern, though here it's used functionally as taxonomy rather than decoration"?

This is 100% generated with AI. I tried to run it twice on my website (www.yanirk.com), it got 3/100 the first time and 13/100 the second time. The text incorporates details from the website which would be practically impossible to prepare a template for. But also, it says "Claude analysis" :)

I have the same question about voice assistants. We have perfected typing, and it is much slower to control anything by voice than by clicking buttons (except maybe searching with a TV remote). Also, when Claude produces 10 pages of information, it's faster to read than to listen to it all.

There is some irony in using an LLM to analyze that. I am not sure how the metrics are calculated but it provides a detailed explanation which is clearly written by AI. I mean, it's a good use of AI, how else would you provide long text that adapts to whatever input you provide? But it is still slop
