On this day in 1941, Operation Barbarossa began. This invasion of the Soviet Union by the Nazis would lead to the creation of the Bielski partisan group, led by the Bielski brothers. By the end of the war, the group had saved over 1,200 Jews.

On this day in 1944, the mass deportation of Hungarian Jews began. Over 400,000 were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp in just two months.
