And that he played baseball for several seasons, and never batted below .300? And that he is traveling with the Pittsburgh club? Well, he is. He is called "Butts" Wagner by the players, and attends to the turnstiles while Hans draws crowds at the gate. He has much the same build as Honus and a considerable facial resemblance. He was a star in the old Eastern league for several seasons back in the '90s.

The death here of Al Wagner, brother of the illustrious John "Hans" Wagner, of baseball fame, and himself a major and minor league star of a day gone bay recalled many interesting and unusual incidents in connection with the carers of the brothers.
Al, who died Monday of an acute internal ailment at the age of 58, was the forerunner of the famous "flying Dutchman" who is a few years younger. They started to play ball on the sandlots of Mansfield (now Carnegie,) a Pittsburgh suburb, and soon their ability became known outside the home diamonds.
In 1893, the Steubenville, Ohio Club of the Interstate League, summoned Al for a conference and offered him a contract. The only condition under which he would sign was that his brother also be given a job, because, he said "John is pretty good."
The Wagners played with many semiprofessional outfits in this district and eastern Ohio before hooking up with faster company and often when Al had agreed to play with a certain team, "Hans" would fill the engagement and no one knew the difference.
Al could play any position on a team and do it well and "Hans" started as an outfielder, but later when to shortstop, at which position he made baseball history.
Later Al went to the Eastern League and graduated from that circuit to the old twelve-club National League, playing with the Brooklyn and Washington clubs.
In 1896, "Hans" received an offer from the Paterson (N.J.) club of the Atlantic League and accepted. In connection with "Hans" debut in the "big show" there is a story that the scout who signed him thought he was getting the signature of Al, but if such an incident occurred it was not made part of the record, and the scout certainly had nothing to regret, considering the niche the big Dutchman carved for himself in the baseball hall of celebrities.

I volunteered at the 9 to 5K today. I rolled t-shirts and helped with breakdown. This event was in the works for a long time, but I wish Dolly could have seen it. The crowd was so much fun!
