AFAIK it's not confirmed that Sony killing discs has anything to do with this, but given Kojima's previous comments, it didn't help. Killing discs will be the Sony equivalent to Nintendo losing Final Fantasy and most of their 3rd party support during the PS1/N64-era because their cartridges sucked.

Miyazaki ripped off (affectionate) 90% of his story ideas from Berserk and fantasy manga/anime when making Dark Souls. He also really liked ICO and Monster Hunter. Disco Elysium's writers drew from many philosophical ideas that were atypical to gaming. They also really liked Planescape Torment.

Miyamoto's gardening hobby was no doubt a big inspiration for Pikmin. So was the strategy game, M.U.L.E, the RTSes it inspired, and the new tech Nintendo was playing around with. In any other medium, getting inspiration and ideas from other examples of that medium would be common sense advice.

Miyazaki had to basically lie about the game his team was making when developing Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Both were considered to have niche appeal at best when they first released. Now they're arguably the most influential games from the last 2 decades.

I haven't posted here in a while an open-source data website is about to be deleted on July 11th and we're trying to preserve as much of it as we can please help boost my tumblr post about it to get the word out, that's the main one that's getting any sort of traction (link in next post)

so one of the largest open source data communities on the internet, data.world, got bought out by a company called ServiceNow, who has decided to fucking delete all of it by July 11th. they've given users barely any notice, no emails, just a fucking banner at the top and a blog post from June that gives barely a month to download your data before they fucking delete it all.
a bunch of archives of incredibly important government datasets like maternal mortality statistics are about to be deleted forever. in a regime where they're known to fudge numbers, we can't trust a lot of the data coming from them to not be altered. open source backups like those found on data.world are vital to being able to verify that the data coming from our government is still intact and not altered. and they're about to delete all of it.
i don't know if we need to start a petition or what. nobody seems to fucking care. there are millions of users on data.world and yet nobody is raising the alarm bells and it makes me feel like I'm going insane. somebody needs to do something. i don't know what to do. it feels like more and more of this world is being destroyed and dismantled. it's not only US centric data, either! it's all sorts of countries from around the world! and they're about to fucking delete everything.
the only things that won't be deleted are private companies who happen to use the paid version of their platform (which isn't accessible data to the open source community; some people have just been using their service to host their own data on privately)
and the kicker? this announcement was made... via an AI generated blog post. so not even any sort of human touch. just a generic, soulless announcement made by a soulless human about to take a wrecking ball to one of the more important websites that exists on the internet.

Case of the Gold Idol: I went through all the cases with my GF. Some clues are tough to sift out, but it's well worth it when you get that 'aha' moment. It has a pretty unique colonial setting, and deductive gameplay that I personally thought was 'fairer' than Return of the Obra Din.

Crosscode: My personal favorite indie from the last decade. Genius Rube Goldberg puzzles intertwined with varied action combat, a stellar OST, a fun cast, and one of the more unique takes on a virtual world. It's DLC final boss and ending are peak. Recommended to anyone who likes action RPGs.

Boot Hill Heroes: A very charming old-west RPG with co-op, a wonderful OST, and an FF9 style equipment and skill system. It really sucks that the sequel ends on a cliffhanger and the third game has been in limbo for 5 years. I'm holding out hope the story will get finished, so give it money.

Gunpoint: One of the best stealth games I've played. A unique mix of 2-D platforming and spy trickery in a noir setting. The story is fairly throw-away, but managed to make me laugh more than once, and the ending(s) is great.

Pipistrello: Easily the best indie Zelda-esque game I've played. Great pixel art, dope music, and movement mechanics so good that going through a Kaizo-Mario-ass level with more pits than safe ground feels effortless. I'm enjoying Mina, but will probably end up liking Pipistrello more.

Yuppie Psycho: A glorious mix of cyberpunk anime, Office Space humor, and Cronenberg body horror that is surprisingly mechanically rich for an indie horror game where you can't fight back against most enemies. 10/10, it and its DLC are must plays.

Princess Remedy: A quick but charming action RPG with a ZX Spectrum look. The original was a free Game Jam title that was good enough to get a sequel and become its own thing. If you're a 'shorter games' person, you can't go wrong with it.

Dungeon Munchies: Has 6/10 gameplay with 10/10 writing and story. A post-apocalyptic hellscape filled with talking food, and the funniest, most earnest characters pursuing their passions even in a world of brutal authoritarianism and eldritch horrors. Simmer and Grill are GOATED.

There's a non-zero chance I would have grown into a religious RW chud if not for the gamers (and furries) I met online in my tweens. Some of them were the first openly LGBTQ people I interacted with. Dang, I love the Yakuza games, but recently played the original Sakura Wars and was disappointed to learn its reboot wasn't an SRPG. You'd think making it an SRPG wouldn't be controversial in 2019, given FE had already taken off, in part because of the romance elements Sakura Wars already had.

Of course, every gaming era has good games. But the 7th gen's defining mechanical trends are things I'm glad are gone/heavily subdued, or wish were gone. Dark Souls is probably the most influential game from the era, in no small part because it did the opposite of most 7th gen trends.
