We know where all those species are nowadays, so we were able to study vulnerability zonation based on abundance and suitability, including microclimate (UHI). Moreover, we compared future suitability with current abundance to point to vulnerable and common, and suitable but uncommon, species.

Juan Antonio Hernández-Agüero @hernandezaguero.com · 01/10/2026
Differences in future suitability were better explained by intrinsic species-level responses, while some exotic species are expected to be able to cope better with climate change, some others will decrease enormously in suitability.

We wanted to know if natives are better prepared for Amsterdam future climate, including the effects of urban heat islands. We discovered that native species are not better prepared for the future Amsterdam climate than exotic species; all decline. Surprisingly, hybrid species decline strongly.

Corrina aimed to understand which will be the future of Amsterdam planted trees, so I guided her to run Species Distribution Models from the top 100 most common tree species in the city of Amsterdam, and we made model predictions for the end of the century!

After spending some weeks disconnecting in the Azores, it's time to get back to work with 100% motivation! In particular, Flores Island made me emphasise the danger of exotic species on islands. I am really concerned about the impact of Cryptomeria japonica and Hedychium gardnerianum on the island.

Our model identified regulating ecosystem services, taxonomic diversity, and intrinsic value of nature as priorities for stakeholders. Conversely, the preferred characteristics of protected areas (e.g., size and accessibility) varyed mostly based on individual preference.

We are facing a research-implementation crisis in conservation, which endangers initiatives such as Kunming-Montreal (GBF). Success in conserving biodiversity requires the engagement of stakeholders. We aimed to find conservation priorities of +350 Mediterranean forest stakeholders of four groups.

The results? 🌴 Plantation area doubled from 1984 to 2021, reaching 71,156 ha. 📍 Biskra leads in date production: 153,135 tons. Why it matters: → Agricultural policies are driving plantation growth right where the palm thrives best 🌱 → Our findings can help guide smarter land use in arid regions.

Remember my thermometers for B&G Urban project to estimate the UHI effect at tree level? I placed 39. After 3 moths I had 25, now I only have 12. My enemies? Local gardeners and street thieves. Risks of urban ecology... I am not sure about the usefulness of this data, but some patterns emerge.

It has been a long journey since 2021, during which I have acquired a great knowledge about drylands and biocultural diversity, made contact with many researchers, and grown as a person and as a researcher. I would especially like to thank my mentor during this time, Klement Tockner.
000
Juan Antonio Hernández-Agüero @hernandezaguero.com · 28/02/2025
Oases cover only 1.5% of drylands and, despite their importance, remain undervalued, highlighting the urgent need to develop adaptive strategies for the #sustainablemanagement involving local and Indigenous communities of these key ecosystems, particularly in the context of The GBF's 30 × 30 target.
100
Juan Antonio Hernández-Agüero @hernandezaguero.com · 28/02/2025
We have also been able to study their biocultural diversity. Oases support the livelihoods of ~400 million people in Asia and North Africa alone. Despite their importance, less than 0.5 per cent of these areas are protected, although 13% of the 8,200 vertebrate species are classified as threatened.
100
Juan Antonio Hernández-Agüero @hernandezaguero.com · 28/02/2025
We aimed to determine the global distribution and biocultural diversity of a neglected ecosystem. We reviewed 5,573 papers to obtain the coordinates of 1,344 different oases from 30 countries. This allowed us to extract a common definition and to use machine learning to create a global map 🗺️.
