Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026When assessing claims like “are the labs sincere about their concern that recursive self improvement is imminent, or is it simply marketing”, I think a useful data point is that openAI is now on a weekly release cycle for point improvements. 2205
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I still remember when DeepMind was about to reveal AlphaGo and Facebook rushed out some half-arsed paper on training a Go AI literally days before the embargo dropped. I’m sure that didn’t happen here 2100
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I wonder when Meta decided to launch Muse in September and when OpenAI decided to launch Dots in September and when Meta learned that OpenAI had decided to launch Dots in September 7196
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Yes, in the long term with a healthy economy, it ought to be effectively a single lock to earnings. Hopefully we have a healthy economy in the long run! 161
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026The obvious situation to consider here is a world where inflation goes up by 10% in y1, which causes 10% earnings growth in y2. Triple lock means there’s two years of 10% uprating; Burnham is promising just one year of 10% uprating, so that the earnings “catches up” with the inflation lock 020
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026No - the promise is it _will_ move above earnings (if earnings stagnate) because it will be locked to inflation. But if earnings boom, the situation is less clear, and the promise is not “rises with earnings” but a more nebulous “wont lose value vs earnings in the long term” 530
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Just need like three or four weeks of no news to clear what’s on my plate and then I’ll be ready for more news 121
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Sounds like the opposite - it won’t rise higher than _inflation_, but if earnings persistently outstrip inflation, it will/may get a kick. 2100
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 29/09/2026@stephenkb.bsky.social look. Look Stephen. Having spent a lot of time in playgrounds in the last five years I do need to point out that the knotted speaking tube depicted in that illustration works absolutely fine 081
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026yeah, though that's a cause-and-effect thing. I do expect to do this, because I expect to have bookish children, which suggests reading in front of them isn't really the thing to unlock that 210
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026obviously true but unless you've over-extended yourself with multiple properties, "my mortgage-free primary residence is worth less" shouldn't derail retirement 130
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026yeah all the time. It's the "demonstrate that reading is a thing I, as an adult, enjoy doing for myself" part that is hard. I do not _get_ to demonstrate what I as an adult enjoy doing for myself, and do not expect to be able to for a couple more years 230
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026lots of people have the explicit-or-implicit plan of "when I retire I will consolidate my multiple properties into one mortgage-free house" and if you then… do not have enough housing equity to do that when you retire, you are suddenly in a very tricky situation 350
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026hopefully they will be able to read unassisted in a couple of years but for now (3 and 5-w/DS) "now we all read" is "now daddy reads to you" It's fine, we'll make it out the other side, but it's a tricky chicken and egg. 440
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I do all of these things. What I do not do is read in front of them, because if i am in front of them, invariably they require care and attention which is incompatible with reading 280
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I read a lot! But it is "when the kids are asleep or in the care of someone else", periods of time when they are not in the best position to learn from my example 310
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026[I do maintain my take that most of "service charges are bad" is just older people who own older houses not realising that the most of the services they receive for free from the council are not provided to people who live in new build properties] 491
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026There is one part of our routine where I am now regularly reading in front of them. Unfortunately it is "when they are watching TV", since I decided to set myself a rule not to just be on my phone while they're watching CBBC 4130
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026screaming at my kids to sit down and stop fighting so daddy can ostentatiously read his novel and they can learn that reading is good 2330
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026while i know this is objectively true, i struggle because i have no idea when i'm supposed to be doing all this reading 10280

Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Like: this is Amazon’s newest UK DC. This makes sense to me: agricultural land close enough to Swindon to get a few people commuting there, but still cheap land and few neighbours 150
Alex Hern @hern.bsky.social · 28/09/2026One thing I legitimately don’t understand is the economics that mean that it is in any way worth it to build DCs in urban areas. They are the least agglomerationy business you can imagine. 7174
