photos of sticky notes added to a sign by [now former U.S. park rangers] in Muir Woods National Monument, in California, seen Aug. 23, 2021. The sticky notes provided context such as redwood grove donor Kent's anti-Asian racism, U.S. forest service Pinchot's eugenics racism, U.S. Congress's 1958 Calif Rancheria Act that terminated federal recognition of Coast Miwok peoples. And that women worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps since 1933. Rather than permanent signage being refabricated [prison labor?], the current fed gov't since 2025 removes all signs in U.S. parks & historical sites that attempt enlightened context about history, climate science, human rights, real life & endangered life. Sunday, stumbled upon historians & archeologists doing work I once dreamed of. Nun-related art note: a box I made a while back & another for my sister, memories & the report of the nun scribe w/ lapis lazuli stuck at her tooth
Small art installation as personal diary, a kind of portable altar, inspired by report of finding medieval nun with blue pigment in her teeth (NYT clipping in other image, text quoted here: NYT Science Times I.15.19 clipping, "…food, textiles…even insect wings. But when studying the tartar of a nun from medieval Germany, Dr. Radini saw particles of a… team of scholars concluded the particles were of ultramarine pigment, the finest and most expensive of blue colorings, made of lapis lazuli stone. The nun was most likely a painter and scribe of religious texts. The pigment most likely ended up on her teeth as she used her mouth to shape her paintbrush. …") Small old Florentine leather box, opened. Inside, old Italian starry paper & paper scrap with birds, old golden thread, the broken-off painted head of a Peruvian clay angel with a sad expression, a Guatemalan worry doll with necklace of small blue glass beads added, an old, small, wooden toy sheep from a crèche from Italy, very small abalone shell, small white clam shell, a carved mother of pearl Irish button, small ceramic hand amulet bead, more blue glass beads, a tiny bell, a square of hard-pan watercolor pigment of ultramarine blue. To the side, a piece cut from an art postcard with the wind-filled sails of the ship in the predella painting by Gentile da Fabriano of San Nicolo saving a storm-tossed ship, with two manila tags inscribed "We saw a sleeping saint in a crystal box when we were children traveling in Italy, above her a blue vault with golden stars painted like asterisks. They found the bones of a medieval nun with bits of blue, lapis lazuli, in her teeth" & "They said she was a scribe & an illuminator of manuscripts. I made a crêche for the children stolen at the border, and leave them water every night, in the morning the water is gone. In the mountains in Guatemala I saw little girls in their trajes tending lambs in the mist. Keep them safe. An offering of blue paint."Old leather box assembled a few years ago as a personal diary, shared now for the sake of saints, children, women, refugees human beings, birds: a Guatemalan worry doll w/halo & lapis lazuli bead, her embroidered features a rather stern or wry, fierce or pained expression. NYT Science Times I.15.19 clipping about medieval scribe nun with lapis lazuli in her teeth (text quoted in alt for other image, no room here). Scrap of blue-tinted charcoal-drawing paper stitched w/embroidery thread & w/handwriting: "When we spent the winter in Italy & France when I was five, somewhere in Italy we saw a church where inside there was a vaulted ceiling frescoed blue w/golden stars like asterisks & there was a young woman fast asleep in a crystal case. They told me she was very old, a miraculously preserved saint. Perhaps she too painted manuscripts w/powdered lapis lazuli in a convent scriptorium & rested her eyes in cloistered gardens, bits of blue in her ivory teeth. I made a crêche for the children stolen at the border, & leave them water." Other objects: small wood sheep from a crêche from Italy, small box made w/transparent shell w/scrap of blue paper w/Florentine bird, blue glass beads, scrap of paper w/ European goldfinch from an illuminated ms, colorful tin dragonfly pin, tree moss, old tube of blue watercolor paint w/gold chocolate wrapper; in lid of the box: postcard from Venice S Marco mosaic of the Creation w/God, angels, the heavens w/golden stars like *s; tin angel from Mexico, Italian starry paper & gold chocolate-wrapper moon; very small image from postcard from Church of S Clemente, Rome, Sta Caterina standing before grim men (not in the detail, it is only her) w/her hands in the beautiful gesture of brilliant discourse.
