Lucan Way and I have been writing about competitive authoritarianism for more than 25 years. We never thought we'd write this piece. www.journalofdemocracy.org/articles/com...

Competitive Authoritarianism in America | Journal of Democracy
The United States has slid into competitive authoritarianism. The slide has been modest and remains reversible—but it is real. Even after Donald Trump, American democracy will remain fragile.

look, i've discovered an x-risk that doesn't require me presupposing digital God. unfortunately, it's deeply conventional and boring (mad emperor in thrall to scheming vizier).

and you don't actually have to live this way, spinning out about "signals" and "priors" and so on. you can just vibe, eat a burrito, read a book, enjoy the ecstatic truth of human existence. i promise there's no loving God condemning you to hellfire for failing to optimize your updating strategy.

"this guy sucks and is weird" is an actual argument, it's just that when you think Bayesian updating is the pinnacle of the human experience your brain is too stunted to comprehend anything else

🚨 [Token][ization] Paper Alert 🚨 Tokenization is a wildly understudied area of language modeling despite it having effects across all of NLP. Over the past ~8 months, 32 (!) tokenizer researchers put together the most comprehensive survey of the field. Check it out!

next week is Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, where thousands of people will get up at 4am to watch lighter than air flight while eating green chile burritos. I for one will continue to dream of the coming dirigible air travel revolution.

posts like this are a quintessential genre on modern social media: divisive Linkedln-aesthetic nonsense meant to provoke intra-community conflict. they communicate essentially no information and are more socially corrosive than even the basest hate speech.

this is specifically what Twitter was re-engineered to do, btw. it exists almost solely to threaten anyone at the flashpoint of a nascent social movement.

I wrote for @thecut.com about the Cornell case and what it says that, at my institution and many others like it, protesters are often punished more harshly than sexual assailants www.thecut.com/article/what...

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

Definitely that and a disinterest in/fear of the pedagogy of teaching research methods, which an outsider with a bit of pathos might salve
