I'm not expecting them to be as fun and weird as Jim Thompson ended up being, but they seem better regarded than other books in a similar vein.

Having never read Ed McBain before, I picked up the first couple volumes cheap. Got to round out my mid-20th century pulp education.

I didn't hate it overall, but it also didn't end up being 'must watch tv'.

Lanterns kinda got worse and worse as it went on. The whole thing really hinged on the chemistry of the leads more than the writing being particularly strong.

When people say the Chauchat is cursed that's not really what they mean. #art #trenchcrusade

A woman in a black and horizon blue uniform standing with an open grimoire in one hand and a skull in the other, with an automatic rifle burning with demonic energy slung across her shoulders.
She has short blond hair, blue eyes, freckled pale skin and tattoos of a snake and barbed wire visible on her chest through her unbuttoned shirt. Her light blue uniform greatcoat is worn open and features decorative white facings, matching her forage cap and contrasting with her black trousers tucked into white spats. A black Adrian helmet bearing a wedjat eye insignia is there for belt clutter. Fucking love belt clutter.
The grimoire she's holding open in her right hand is cascading with fabric bookmarks stamped with wax seals.

one thing i think all creatives need to look in the mirror and actually internalize is sometimes that thing you made didnt pop off not cuz the algorithm hates you or cuz people can't appreciate good art when they see it but cuz sometimes you are in fact delivering mid you gotta take those Ls

all in I prefer 'The Dogs of War', which has similar flaws but a more interesting cast and a climax that pays off the dry groundwork.

Finished 'Day of the Jackal', bit of an overdue read. Forsythe's clinical approach to writing threads the line between developing a specific professional atmosphere and being fucking boring, but it clipped along. Being the grandfather of airport novels its dated in some genre things.

going to hard disagree. we're not in a 'watch movies and play video games' crisis, while there is a pretty serious literacy crisis going on. with even people aspiring to be storytellers saying they 'don't read books' I think the watching films and playing games bit can take a backseat.

No Inktober/October art challenge for me this year, I'm buried in other projects I can't talk about for now. Skipping this event after something like 12 years in a row feels so weird 😅 Anyway, here's a quick drawing of my other postponed projects!

Three Earthen (Dwarf adjacent characters) meet with Dame Ermine and her squire. They are shrugging.

the only non-negotiable for writing is you have to read. doesn't matter if you're writing comics, prose, screenplays. read. read books, articles, scripts, comics. fiction and non-fiction. read lots of 'em and never stop reading.

imo the best romance currently being written isn't classified as romance. its either cross genre or considered general literature.

Forgotten Island was a pretty good animated film with a pretty damn terrible title. imo half the reason its bombing is the bland as hell title. but its a fun ride and my wife (who is filipina) really appreciated the depictions of filipino culture and folklore.

I drew Eve's characters from our Nightmare over Ragged Hollow game for her birthday last year. Rust the bard and Zelda the rat catcher.

A fancily dressed elf with rust and green hair, carrying a flute and a few weapons. The other character is a human wielding a dagger, she is surrounded by rats. One of them is on her shoulder.

the revisionism running around that the paul ws anderson resident evil movies were good, actually, is also dumb as hell.

020

Honkey Kong @henrygoeldner.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

resident evil was fun. it was a much, much better movie than any of the others. some of the crits about the ending are legit but it absolutely was a resident evil movie, not its own thing with some resident evil references. that crit is dumb as hell.

imo most things are funnier when they're not trying to be 'funny'. one joke that lands isn't worth the six misfires leading up to it.

Joe Abercrombie's novels are genuinely funnier than the vast majority of material found in the 'fantasy comedy' genre.
