That’s the average temperature in the UK over 150 years, now 2 degrees above pre industrial. That’s all.

I’m avoiding banks. The building society I use does not use an Authenticator app, but you may find one amongst the smaller ones.

Taking our foot of the brakes, never mind how gently we pressed it, seems like a really bold move wisely we’re accelerating into that concrete wall.

This is the thing. Depending on who you ask, we’ve just gone past 1.5C; we will go past it next year; and for sure we’re going past it this decade. Meanwhile, atmospheric CO2 levels are rising faster than ever. That’s right, they are high, and rising faster than last year or last decade.

Would you be able to help identify the tiny yellow ones that grow on Orkney? I have previously little knowledge of identifying fungi. They are probably no more than 20-30mm across when fully grown.

Decoupling needs to happen; it’ll further drive electrification. Also the grid needs to be upgraded so that we can use all wind energy all the time, and not stop turbines because the grid is “full”. Any idea whether that data (the capacity that is off line) is available?

Henk Muller @henk-muller.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Keep in mind: you’re looking at the rate of change that flattened out, actual concentrations still shot up. So one explanation is that humanity took emitters away at the same rate that it built new ones; rather than just add new ones.

Henk Muller @henk-muller.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Is the co2 increase that levelled out, not the co2 concentration itself
110
Henk Muller @henk-muller.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Stating the obvious here: this is the first derivative of co2 concentrations in the atmosphere, hence actual co2 rises quadratically at the moment: every year it rises more than last year on top of last year’s rise. That’s bad.

Inside big cities you cannot generate enough power, and you’ve got to replace fossil fuel transport through gas pipes and petrol tankers with an upgraded grid that is mostly underground, which is highly congested with other infrastructure
000
Henk Muller @henk-muller.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
At a guess the weak link is the grid inside big cities, e.g. London. Outside them there’s a lot that can be done by distributing generation and storage. In the past you needed to build one big power station. Now you can build 1,000 small ones, and storage is easily distributed too

People near the top of the pyramid feel safe. Thing is, each round of cleansing sees the top few swallowing wealth from everywhere else, concentrating wealth in thousand, then hundred, then ten people. Bloodshed in the late 1700s in France solved it; I’d hope there’s a peaceful way in 2026.

I’d expected that the fossil fuel industry would’ve got rid of that pesky measurement station by now. Keep in mind, when the fire alarm goes off you’re first thought should be to silence the alarm.

That sounds like a random merry money go around scheme: adds a government tax and royal income to electricity bills. Then the government needs to give people help with their bills, so give people money back. The king keeps his cut though

The simple fact that a triple lock creates a baseline inflation of 3.5% (?) and is therefore a really bad idea in the long term doesn’t matter to the billionaires who just want to line their own pockets and fear they’re next.

Portugal has 1 death per 100,000 people per year. Glasgow has 40 deaths per 100,000 people per year. There are many differences between those cities; decriminalisation of drugs being one of them. We need some sense in the debate, people like David Nutt. Attached a snippet from his Wikipedia page
…pamphlet 51 containing a lecture Nutt had given to the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King's College London in July 2009. In this, Nutt repeated his view that illicit drugs should be classified according to the actual evidence of the harm they cause, and presented an analysis in which nine 'parameters of harm' (grouped as
'physical harm', 'dependence', and
'social harms') revealed that alcohol or tobacco were more harmful than LSD, ecstasy or cannabis. In this ranking, alcohol came fifth behind heroin, cocaine, barbiturates and methadone, and tobacco ranked ninth, ahead of cannabis, LSD and ecstasy, he said. In…

It’s dreadful. Any bias encoded in LLMs will now reject proposals based on said bias. Academics will now be encouraged to check their final proposal with LLMs against the call’s criteria and “improve” the proposal to make it more likely to pass the LLM triage.

It’s a very inefficient way to create heat. If it’s true waste-heat (say from an industrial process), then district heating is a great way to use that heat. In this case, there’s a question as to whether this was waste-heat or waste-compute and electricity that should’ve never been used/created
