Licensing creates a classic regulatory moat. US AI companies can easily absorb compliance costs, while open-weight and international competitors (like Kimi or GLM) face massive friction. It’s corporate self-preservation disguised as safety to consolidate US control. (2/2)

Calls to slow down AI development are about market position, not safety. Open-weight models already rival proprietary tech in many engineering and automation tasks. Lowering inference costs threatens closed-source business models, driving those companies to push for pre-deployment licensing. (1/2)

The AI bubble may be about to bust. Peter Thiel has sold all of his Nvidia stock. We all need to say this very clearly: NO BAILOUTS FOR THEFT-TECH! Expropriate their asses instead. They stole from all of us and fully plan to burn the planet. They owe us - not the other way around. 1/3

Time to start using my Bluesky account more properly. I've been pretty passive this year. Maybe that's why everything sucks so much these days? In any case, what should I write about here? 1. Complain about AI 2. Praise AI and predict what's coming next 3. Let an AI write everything here instead

Unfortunately that is a very bad misinterpretation of that quote. The full quote goes "When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich" and is attributed to Jacques Rousseau during the french revolution. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_the...

I was playing around with Ultrawide Band (UWB)to test out some ideas I have. However, only the top tier Android phones (Pixel Pro and Samsung Galaxy S) have support for this. Meanwhile, the iPhone has supported this since the iPhone 11.

That is sort of what happens now with BLE. Some application level stuff is still happening, but it's around audio which makes it more valid. The rest of the stuff are low level improvements. Still years until we see a wide adoption of these improvements.

This happens to all software, only it happens faster for apps. This is why software developers will be needed. How can the code be structured so we can reuse as much as possible when rebuilding for the new scenarios will be a more important skill than simply producing working code.
000
Erik Hellman @hellman.io · 21/12/2024
When both the hardware they run on, and the use case they are supposed to fulfil changes frequently, the entire codebase becomes wrong. It's like we would try to fit an airport into a harbour. AI doesn't help at all when we reach this point, because the context of the code is wrong.

I love the example of the airline app. The thing with the apps we build for smartphones is that they need to be scrapped every 3-4 years. That goes against the "common sense" that you should refactor instead of rewrite software. The problem with apps is that everything around them changes so fast.

Lock-in happens all the time and it's not inherently bad. Language and culture are lock-in examples. The difference is that we can expand on those. Bluetooth should have stopped when they reached the application layer and just focused on P2P communication.

Erik Hellman @hellman.io · 21/12/2024
Yes, when you control both devices you can cut through the broken parts easily.
000
Erik Hellman @hellman.io · 21/12/2024
When you control both devices you can cut corners and don't have to present the same horrible UX as for generic BT devices. They can simply hide all the generic pairing stuff under a better UX.

Erik Hellman @hellman.io · 20/12/2024
Or just do what we did with the Internet. Define an open protocol (IP, TCP, and UDP) that lets anyone communicate how they prefer. It worked for Zigbee, but unfortunately we couldn't include it in smartphones.
010
Erik Hellman @hellman.io · 20/12/2024
Exactly. The lower levels and radio technology in Bluetooth is awesome. It's an extremely robust protocol. It's the upper layers relating to applications that cause all the headache.

Shameless plug: if you're working on integrating a Bluetooth device in a product and you're struggling with getting it to work smoothly, let me know and I can help out. I've worked with this for 10+ years now. :)

Erik Hellman @hellman.io · 20/12/2024
So how can this be fixed? The only way is for Google and Apple (and Microsoft for Windows computers) to make their certification process cheaper and simpler. Bluetooth SIG has done better with the later updates to the standard, but we will be stuck with the broken parts for another decade at least.
100
Erik Hellman @hellman.io · 20/12/2024
The device manufacturers can make this easier, but due to bureaucracy very few do. In order to skip the annoying setup for a new device, the manufacturer needs to get it certified by both Apple and Google (iPhone and Android). It costs a lot and takes a lot of time. Most choose never to do this.

You know when you want to pair a new headset and there are multiple dialogs that appear and it seems like you're approving things multiple times? Sometimes you also get a question if you want to share your contacts with the device. Very confusing for most people.
