this is excellent
stigmatizing Rowling’s weaponization of childhood not only requires personal withdrawal for most people, it necessitates something much more difficult: being a giant fucking killjoy. You should tell people discussing the show that you’re not watching it, and why, and you should let yourself openly cringe at your sister-in-law’s Harry Potter tote bag, and you should bring up unprompted that the onslaught of legislation against trans people makes you sad and angry, presuming it does, and you should do this because, not despite, the fact that it will make you look annoying as hell and may make everyone present uncomfortable. (You probably won’t even get the kudos of looking like a cool ally, because you’re still ultimately talking about Harry Potter. Sorry about that.)

thomas texted me from the @filmlinc.bsky.social book fair to ask "should I buy this, it's $30" and I'm pretty sure my response was the fastest I've ever said yes to anything in my life
old(er) poster for Ken Russell's The Devils, the text on it says:

"The Devils is not for everyone.

It is a true story, carefully documented,
historically accurate — a serious work by a distinguished film maker. As such it is likely to be hailed as a masterpiece by many. But because it is explicit and highly graphic in depicting the bizarre events that occurred in France in 1634, others will find it visually shocking and deeply disturbing.

We feel a responsibility to alert you to this.
It is our hope that only the audience that will appreciate THE DEVILS will come to see it."

and then there's an image of Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave being little freaks

then the credits, title, the old X rating

yeah, this essay rules, read it defector.com/humanists-ha...
Our critics are really fucking stupid, and we’ve given them way too much leeway to conjure senile fantasies out of their own illiteracy.
Very smart people have already defended humanities scholarship for its difficulty as well as its sometimes intimidating specialization. Jordy Rosenberg, in the now-defunct AVIDLY section of the Los Angeles Review of Books, wrote a wonderful personal essay about the joys of struggling with Judith Butler’s ideas specifically. My point here is not to defend the alleged properties of our writing—which, as I’ve suggested, are mostly projections—but rather the specific reading practices already intrinsic to humanities teaching and research that attend to the difficulties of making thought manifest in language. Call it form, call it figuration, call it rhetoric; these are the features of communication that render its use irreducible to the simple transmission of data bytes and incompatible with the reactionary desire for immediacy.

this is the kind of essay that, ten years ago, would have been the only thing anyone on social media talked about for two or three days. what a stunning piece of writing goldengoal.world/2026/06/14/l...
For the 2002 World Cup, Dad and I stayed up and watched every single game. The time difference didn't matter. It made me feel like I was on the other side of the world, traveling freely. How could we not lose sleep after watching Senegal defeat France, the reigning champions? While watching that inaugural game on Univision, I heard the commentators speak about the giant upset in terms of colonization, "the colonized beating the colonizer," shouting about the power and beauty of soccer. When the final whistle blew, Dad jumped with joy, along with every Senegalese on the screen. Then, Dad turned to me and spoke of justice, of how everything was possible in soccer, of how empires can and should fall on and outside of the soccer field. I understood it as a win for all of us, the collective that as an adult I've learned to refer to as the Global South, or the Global Majority. To play soccer all you need is a ball. I love writing because I only need a pen and a piece of paper. Both writing and soccer are
egalitarian in that way: the art and the sport of the people, for the people. Like any soccer fan, I've always wanted to go to the World Cup. On the field, anything is possible. Underdog nations can make a surprise run with a real shot at reaching the finals, like Turkey and South Korea in 2002, Uruguay in 2010, Croatia in 2018, Morocco in 2022.
I can only imagine what celebrating a goal from the stands must feel like, but what I do know is that in that moment of exhilarating joy, the whole world is either heartbroken or celebrating with you. An individual moment, a global moment, in real time.

HOMOSEXUALITY
Frank O’Hara

So we are taking off our masks, are we, and keeping our mouths shut? as if we'd been pierced by a glance!
The song of an old cow is not more full of judgment than the vapors which escape one's soul when one is sick;
so I pull the shadows around me like a puff and crinkle my eyes as if at the most exquisite moment
of a very long opera, and then we are off!
without reproach and without hope that our delicate feet will touch the earth again, let alone "very soon".
It is the law of my own voice I shall investigate.
I start like ice, my finger to my ear, my ear to my heart, that proud cur at the garbage can
in the rain. It's wonderful to admire oneself with complete candor, tallying up the merits of each of the latrines. I4th Street is drunken and credulous, s3rd tries to tremble but is too at rest. The good
love a park and the inept a railway station, and there are the divine ones who drag themselves up
and down the lengthening shadow of an Abyssinian head in the dust, trailing their long elegant heels of hot air crying to confuse the brave "It's a summer day,
and I want to be wanted more than anything else in the world."
