Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 21/12/2025This one took a long road. After an initial peer-review, it morphed into something different from my 2024 paper in Leeds' IMC. It combines some of my doctoral research with my own later review of it and ideas from notes I've been taking over the years. 1122
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 15/07/2025Likewise! Not sure I'll be able to attend next year, but I hope we'll meet again in the future. 010
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 14/07/2025This year's IMC was fun. No travel issues, no cancellations. Went straight to the bookfair Monday morning, enjoyed others' papers, found folks from last year, met new people, and discussed future projects. An overall positive experience. And I still can't eat an English breakfast 😅 280
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 02/07/2025Thank you! And there will always be a published paper after the presentation ;) 110
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 02/07/2025Unusual of me to be doing this so late, but it's in the making and should be ready by Friday 🫡 Leeds IMC 2025 is just around the corner and I sure hope my flight does not get canceled like last year's... 180
#legislativas2025 140
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 30/01/2025That time I explained folks that Snorri's Edda is a poetry manual, not a work on Norse mythology, using as an analogy modern self-taught books 😅 Skaldic poetry for dummies. Learn to be an old-fashioned poet. Skaldic poetry: learn to construct it on your own. 270
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 30/01/2025The longest paper I've written thus far is thirty one pages long (including four of bibliography) and has ten maps. And I just submitted it for publication. 1140
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 11/01/2025Eu disse «cazares» (tipo, gente do Cazaquistão).

Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 13/12/2024Agreed. And I would love if there was material evidence of Viking presence in Portuguese territory. Alas, when it comes to the Azores, there's a lot of wishful thinking not unlike several claims of Viking presence in the US. 110
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 13/12/2024The claims that came out a few years ago were doubtful at best, so it's good that the evidence (real or otherwise) is being reassessed. 110
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 13/12/2024Pretty sure a lot of US Americans are about to find out the bottom is not where they thought it was. 100
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 13/12/2024In a not-so-distant-future, Europeans travelling to the US will be advised to have their shots in order & US Americans coming to Europe will be required to have theirs.

Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 02/12/2024I'm pretty sure a lot of native speakers of English have no real appreciation of the importance of an official status and its full implementation. Nor of the privilege that a lingua franca enjoys, even when a native anglophone knows other tongues. 010
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 02/12/2024The end result may well end up being the same, especially if there's to be further European integration. If a language is deprived of official status, its usefulness is reduced and hence the need to learn it. regional Catalan still suffers from that problem vis a vis national Spanish. 000
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 02/12/2024The irony here, of course, is that you, David, have in the past correctly pointed out that France has been a very effective language killer, but here you are endorsing as 💯 spot-on an article that describes as sensible a situation that is contributing to language death in France.
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 02/12/2024"A state that works in a single official language but stays out of people’s homes would seem to be a sensible balance." It's not! As speakers of Occitan or Mirandese know all too well, a language with little use outside one's home is a language with no status, no use and eventually no speakers. 220
Hélio Pires @heliuspirus.bsky.social · 01/12/2024That's true, but we can do it without giving visibility to those holding that view. Talk about it, argue against it, demolish the idea that animals exist only to provides us with food, but don't give fame to those saying it. 110
