Anthropomorphism in the age of Large Language Models: An overview of potential risks and mitigations
Large Language Models (LLMs) and more broadly Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are often described and understood in human-like terms, a phenomenon known as anthropomorphism. This paper provides a...

I am very proud of this work, and especially thankful to the great multidisciplinary team behind it!! Bringing together perspectives from AI, cognitive science, philosophy, neuroscience and AI ethics made the many discussions around this paper particularly enriching! 8/10

We also review proposals for mitigating these risks across design, communication, education and governance. A recurring theme is the need for better concepts to describe what AI systems actually are and can do, and greater care with the language we use to talk about them. 7/10

We therefore propose a taxonomy of 21 concerns associated with anthropomorphic AI framing, across five overlapping domains: epistemic, affective, human agency, normative, and societal/institutional. The taxonomy is probably the part of the paper I’m happiest with! :) 6/10
Conceptual taxonomy of concerns associated with anthropomorphic framing of AI systems. Twenty-one concerns are grouped by their primary locus into five overlapping dimensions: societal and institutional, human agency, normative, epistemic, and affective. The categories are analytic rather than mutually exclusive, and equal-width tiles do not represent prevalence, severity, causal strength, or effect size.

And this matters even before we settle what capacities AI systems actually possess. People act on what they perceive systems to know, understand, feel or intend. Those perceptions can shape trust, emotional attachment, decision-making, responsibility and much more. 5/10

LLMs disrupt that old association. Fluent dialogue can now be produced without another human on the other side of the exchange. Yet our cognitive machinery still treats language as a powerful cue of mind. We call one manifestation of this “linguistic pareidolia”. 4/10

For almost all of human history, encountering language meant encountering traces of another person. Even through a screen, a message was still a proxy for someone behind it: a mind with intentions, feelings and needs. 3/10

Humans are already strongly predisposed to interpret the world through intentions, beliefs, emotions and agency. LLMs add something particularly powerful to this: language. We now routinely interact with machines capable of remarkably competent, sustained dialogue. 2/10

Very happy to finally share this preprint after a looong time in the making! :) “Anthropomorphism in the age of Large Language Models” Why do we so readily understand AI systems in human-like terms? And when does this become problematic? 👇 1/10

We built the simplest possible social media platform. No algorithms. No ads. Just LLM agents posting and following. It still became a polarization machine. Then we tried six interventions to fix social media. The results were… not what we expected. arxiv.org/abs/2508.03385
