The NYT Spelling Bee editors clearly have not heard me gab about the so-called “Cothon” at Motya 😂

NB I've also tried assigning Oxford World's Classics translations via the Oxford Scholarly Editions Online platform, which works well for some texts but can be quite unwieldy for others.

Have only used it for very small excerpts or for geography-heavy readings where the linked maps are useful for students. I've found LacusCurtius (also largely built off old Loeb translations but with modifications) to be a bit easier to use, though it's more limited in scope.

Sox win! A few (crowd-related) highlights: a couple got engaged on the kiss cam, the folks next to me engaged in some very good-natured heckling of the Yankees’ relief pitchers just below, & a large group on the upper deck spent seemingly the *entire* game standing&twirling their shirts overhead?!?!

Not sure if any of these enrollments were driven by newfound interest in antiquity thanks to Nolan’s Odyssey film, but regardless, am very glad to see lots of students eager to take courses in ancient history/classics!

Looks like both sections (though I’m only teaching one) of Greek history here in the autumn are full, and there are only a couple open seats left in my “Roman Civil War between History, Memory, and Representation” seminar - huzzah!

My Reacting to the Past microgame, "When Have Women Paid Taxes? The Roman Matrons' Protest of 42 BCE" is now available for download to members at reactingconsortium.org! If you've ever wondered what Brutus' mom or Marcus Antonius' wife were doing while their menfolk fought, this game is for you!
A Reacting to the Past microgame under review, "When Have Women Paid Taxes? The Roman Matrons' Protest of 42 BCE", by Anise K. Strong, with a fresco from 1st century CE Herculaneum depicting various women of different ages whispering and talking to each other. The fresco is fragmentary and broken, symbolizing how we can never truly fully reconstruct ancient women's history, in particular, and may need to fill in the gaps judiciously ourselves.

Lots of thoughts (& a few critiques), but overall I really enjoyed it. So fascinating also to see the impact of mod. scholarship, translations, & Nolan’s own filmography to the bones & shape of this film. Definitely will be rewatching soon (but in the meantime, time to reread some Homeric Greek)!

First visit to the new Obama Presidential Center, just around the corner from us in Hyde Park! The Obamalisk is *slowly* growing on me, but I was really impressed by the thoughtful design of the complex as a whole.

Amusing tidbit du jour (from E.J. Kenney's 1978 review of H. Dahlmann (1975), 'Cornelius Severus')
Screenshot of a paragraph of text, reading: "Dahlmann’s comment on this, that ‘Welch andere Lösungen man auch immer ausdenken mag, es erscheint geraten, auf diese zu verzichten’, deserves to be considered for the De Quincey Prize for Fearless Understatement. (‘I do affirm, and always shall (let what will come of it), that murder is an improper line of conduct, highly improper; and I do not stick to assert, that any man who deals in murder, must have very incorrect ways of thinking, and truly inaccurate principles.’)”

Working on a chapter for publication: The min amount of beeswax required to make five "ten" rams for Antony/Cleopatra's fleet is around 1,274 kg. This is 36.4% of the total amount of beeswax needed (~3,500 kg) to produce 200 rams for the Egadi fleet. Assuming no reuse of beeswax. Damn.

More Thucydides today, this time the Mytilenean debate. We also discussed Paula Arnold’s “The Persuasive Style of Debates in Direct Speech in Thucydides” (Hermes 120, 1992). She makes a compelling case for why the speeches he puts in the mouths of historical actors are so tricky but worth reading 🧵
