When Robert and Ginny moved to Colorado Springs and built a house on Mesa Avenue, they got to choose their street number since they were the first residents. Robert chose 1776 for obvious reasons. This photo shows the metal address marker they had made that adorned their front yard for many years.

"I am trembling as I write this, to address a letter to you, and I see that my typewriter itself is laboring under the weight of what I want to say but probably will not be able to. When you entered the science fiction field it was an infantile field, written so and appealing so. Those days are gone forever and because of you. You made our field worthy of adult readers and adult writers. I have long wanted to tell you that I know this, but I've been blocked in saying so; I don't know why.
Perhaps there are some persons that one admires so much that one cannot even manage to express admiration—at least aloud. But my admiration for you and my enjoyment of your work has been in my heart for many years, unsaid. I want to say it now.

"I was asking questions. I was not giving answers. I was trying to shake the reader loose from some preconception and induce him to think for himself, along new and fresh lines. In consequence each reader gets something different out of that book because he himself supplies the answers.

If I managed to shake him loose from some prejudice, preconception, or unexamined assumption, that was all I intended to do. A rational human being does not need answers, spoon fed to him on "faith," he needs questions to worry over-serious ones. The quality of the answers then depends on him....But anyone who takes that book as answers is cheating himself. It is an invitation to think—not to believe."

"Moving parts in rubbing contact require lubrication to avoid excessive wear. Honorifics and formal politeness provide lubrication where people rub together. Often the very young, the untraveled, the naive, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as "empty," "meaningless," or "dishonest," and scorn to use them. No matter how "pure" their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best."

"The trouble with Bob Heinlein is that he doesn't need to write. When I want a story from him, the first thing I have to do is think up something he would like to have, like a swimming pool.

“The second thing is to sell him on the idea of having it. The third thing is convince him he should write a story to get the money to pay for it, instead of building it himself."

I wake up in night and think I've heard him-just a whisper: "Man ... Man my best friend..." But when I say, "Mike?" he doesn't answer. Is he wandering around somewhere, looking for hardware to hook onto? Or is he buried down in Complex Under, trying to find way out?

Those special memories are all in there somewhere, waiting to be stirred. But I can't retrieve them; they were voice-coded. Oh, he's dead as Prof, I know it. (But how dead is Prof?) If I punched it just once more and said, "Hi, Mike!" would he answer, "Hi, Man! Heard any good ones lately?" Been a long time since I've risked it. But he can't really be dead; nothing was hurt—he's just lost. You listening, Bog? Is a computer one of Your creatures?

"Peace is a condition in which no civilian pays any attention to military casualties which do not achieve page-one, lead-story prominence-unless that civilian is a close relative of one of the casualties. But if there ever was a time in history when "peace" meant that there was no fighting going on, I have been unable to find out about it."

"All men must die, it was their single common heritage. But a book need never die and should not be killed; books were the immortal part of man...
Books had always been his best friends. In a hundred public libraries they had taught him. From a thousand newsstands they had warmed his loneliness. He suddenly felt that if he had not been able to save some books, it would hardly be worthwhile to live."

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
Specialization is for insects."

"So far as I know. It's not enough to be able to lie with a straight face; anybody with enough gall to raise on a busted flush can do that. The first way to lie
artistically is to tell the truth-but not all of it.

“The second way involves telling the truth, too, but is harder: Tell the exact truth and maybe all of it .. but tell it so unconvincingly that your listener is sure you are lying."

"How often have you seen a headline like this?—TWO DIE ATTEMPTING RESCUE OF DROWNING CHILD. If a man gets lost in the mountains, hundreds will search and often two or three searchers are killed. But the next time somebody gets lost just as many volunteers turn out. Poor arithmetic... but very human. It runs through all our
folklore, all human religions, all our literature—a racial conviction that when one human needs rescue, others should not count the price. Weakness? It might be the unique strength that wins us a Galaxy."

"Biographies are for dead people. My published works are public matters; critics are free to publish any criticisms they see fit. This is an occupational hazard which I would not avoid if I could-—my only counterploy is to avoid reading the reviews of my works, as the favorable ones tend to produce unhealthy conceit and the unfavorable ones are rarely helpful to the writer. My private life I try to keep private."

"Johnny gulped and gathered Bindlestiff under one arm. The Marshal led him to the elephant-drawn carriage. The dog slipped out of his arms and bounded up into the carriage and into the lap of the lady. She patted it and looked proudly, happily, down at Johnny Watts. "Hello, Johnny! Welcome home, darling!" "Martha!" he sobbed-and Rex stumbled and climbed into his carriage to embrace his queen. The sweet voice of a bugle sounded up ahead, the parade started up again, wending its endless way—"
