Apple "detectives" wanted to identify a gnarly old tree growing on a remote plot of land in Maine. What they discovered was the key to a centuries-old apple mystery.

How apple detectives solved the mystery of an ancient tree—and rewrote the history of fruit
And how they might have helped save the future of American apples

that's not a "risk," it's a fact of life. no democrat president going back to Carter has ever done anything but consolidate whatever abuses of power his republican predecessor bequeathed him, and there is no chance of the party nominating anyone in '28 who won't do the same

everything is somehow simultaneously both too metaphorical and too awfully literal

the computational and formal aspects of science are massively overtaught, and too early. much more useful to learn to evaluate scientific claims, to understand how and why they're made, by whom etc.: but that's rhetoric, we don't do that

funny to think of this as an influence (but by what variety of misreading?) on the Chelsea House content mill Harold would be overseeing a couple decades later

when you default to crime-rate rhetoric in order to justify how much social good some government action does, you are in fact endorsing and practicing criminalization politics. you're playing the cops' game. learn to stop doing it

you could have stopped at just "more people having their basic needs met." that's an intrinsic and self-sufficient good. it doesn't need to be juiced with a fucking crime argument

For those who are reading Black Reconstruction by W.E.B. Du Bois for the first time or again, here are some sources I recommend to read along with it, if you haven’t read them.

When people insist I'm not old, they're telling me they think old is shameful, I should be ashamed of admitting it; and they're letting me know that whatever my experience of this phase of my life is, I can just keep it to myself. Better I be alone with it than that they give up their denial

you're talking about a statistical text robot built on signal-processing algorithms. there are no "flavors." there is no agency doing any "adjusting," much less intentionally with respect to a user. you have an incorrect understanding of the technology

they're not "teaching" it anything though. that's an obfuscation. all they're actually doing is constraining the chat's linguistic space (to some limited extent) so that sycophantic expressions are less likely to appear in the output that it generates

It's a point of emphasis for me this year to read physical books, mostly novels. Till maybe a decade ago I never went anywhere without a book, and it's shocking to me the extent that I've lost the muscle memory for immersing myself in one. (And as someone getting older it's also a memory practice)

it's more that Platner seems so replacement-level hatable. like, you could throw a rock into any given prep academy and stand a good chance of hitting one of the type

Newsom is the best evidence we have that the rich are actually reptilian aliens in skin suits. Platner's just a Maine-coded local oaf: hating him has no bite, no savor

industrialization is less about automating processes than about automatizing the people who work within them. given that "good enough" has no bottom here, slaughtering people wholesale may be one of the few areas (along with call centers) where AI can fully replace human labor
000
He Hates These Cans @hehatesthesecans.bsky.social · 06/03/2026
ludicrous to talk about "human decision" being "sidelined" when the AI itself is the decision. you don't use AI to get targets "right," you use it bc there's no target you could ever get wrong. you use AI when you've decided on industrialized slaughter and want a cheap way to scale up
