I’m seeing Greywind in Chicago this Thursday. It’s hard to even describe how good this band is. It’s like if Paramore was super depressed and way better (no shade to Paramore I’m a Paramore fan)! This is going to be cathartic as hell. I fuckin love this band.

With the Limp Bizkit revisionism I decided to listen to Chocolate Starfish because I’d never given it an honest try and… Wow everyone was right at the time to say this band absolutely sucks! Break stuff and rollin are awesomely bad but they are the exception. Hot Dog is among the worst songs ever

Part of what I appreciate about this band in general is how unapologetically ambitious they are and how equally capable they are of making something incredible that pays off that ambition. It’s incredibly rare to have such vision and also be able to pull it off so often.

Listening to The Great Misdirect by Between the Buried and Me for the hundredth time. So underrated. My intro to the album was it was the newest BTBAM album and my intro to the band was Colors. I fell in love with it because of just how insane it was that they matched Colors just an album later.

The George RR Martin universe would be better off without the dragons. Given the human drama as the main source of intrigue every time they show up it just seems brutish and silly and a distraction from the main plot. Not to mention an all too convenient and lazy deus ex machina.

The Rings of Power just wasn’t a good show. The plot wasn’t right for a Silmarillion take and it also wasn’t good on its own. It was trying to do way too much. Characters weren’t true to the books nor good in their own right. Writing and pacing bad. Just a fail all around.

At its peak moments there’s legitimately nothing that can go in your ears that’s more immensely gratifying and awe inspiring as heavy metal. It’s hard to even describe to people who don’t like heavy music what it feels like but it’s spiritual. It’s everything.

The new In This Moment is about what I expected. Their early work is some of my favorite metalcore ever made and even Blood, Black Widow, and Ritual have some bangers but they’ve been chasing trends since Blood and now they just aren’t making good music at all anymore.

Part of the romance of 90s pop and alternative was it was the last decade popular music wasn’t very obviously corporate controlled and manufactured. Artists made weird and interesting songs and the record companies just let the songs exist on their own merits.

Something that sucked about music in the 2010 era is how every pop song had to have a rap verse jammed into it to the point where it was done as part of a formula without any regard for whether it fit the song and it legitimately made a lot of otherwise good songs worse.

“How Bizarre” by OMC is one of the best encapsulations of how awesomely weird the 90s were. There’s basically not one 90s kid who wouldn’t sing along to it if it came on. There’s no way a song so weird and different would ever get mainstream today. Wonderful decade, biased though I may be.

Fam - should I go see Iron Maiden and Megadeth at Tinley Park? On the one hand - Iron Maiden is a bucket list band for me, and Megadeth is among my favorite bands ever and they are retiring soon. On the other- Tinley sucks as a venue and tickets are expensive as hell and I’ll be in the nosebleeds

I have my ticket to see Scardust in Chicago. I really hope they do the Sands of Time suite but regardless it’s gonna be great. This is maybe the most underrated symphonic metal band there is. Everything they do is so well composed and thoughtfully executed.

As a former fat kid, the movie Heavyweights meant a lot to me. It was funny as hell and very quotable but it also told me that it was ok to be fat. That it was ok to know that about yourself and still love yourself. That might sound silly but stuff like that means a lot to kids sometimes.

I like to refer to the comedic delivery of norm Macdonald as “smirking deadpan.” I feel like it very adequately and succinctly describes the way he would deliver lines that were deadpan while he was already kind of laughing at his own dumb jokes. But it was a style only he had mastered.

Sad day in our house. About 11 years ago we received a promo freebie for renewing phone service. We chose a portable Bluetooth speaker called “mini boom.” Mini boom faithfully cranked out tunes while sounding very good for its size and value.

As a longtime Between the Buried and Me fan who has claimed them as my favorite band since sometime shortly after Parallax 2 came out, it was tough to admit to myself that The Blue Nowhere was their first true miss in my opinion. It’s not a bad album but I just couldn’t get into it.

Some of Randy Rhodes shit still remains elite even in the face of more modern guitar stylings. He was such an inventive and skilled shredder and some of the tones and distortion he employed really gave Ozzy songs a unique and compelling aura. Just such a great player.
